A devastating collision on the A66 near Middlesbrough has left seven people ᴅᴇᴀᴅ and triggered a much wider investigation into dangerous driving, suspected organised crime and a series of incidents that unfolded in the hours before the crash.

The tragedy happened at around 3:39 a.m. on Saturday, August 22, when a Volkswagen Pᴀssat travelling on the wrong side of the A66 collided head-on with a marked Cleveland Police vehicle. All five people travelling in the Pᴀssat and the two police officers inside the patrol vehicle were killed at the scene. The officers were identified as PC Matthew Blades, 37, and PC Tom Clough, 38. The five young men were Michael Robert Cahill, 23, Jacob Matusiak, 23, Makai Saddington, 18, and teenagers Theo Rae and Cole Robert Worthy.

According to investigators, the events began before the fatal collision. Cleveland Police had received reports of two vehicles being driven dangerously in the Middlesbrough area. One was a Volvo XC60 that was reportedly involved in ramming properties, while the other was the Volkswagen Pᴀssat. Police said both vehicles were believed to have been using cloned registration plates, allowing them to avoid normal detection, although they were later identified through automatic number plate recognition technology. The Volvo was subsequently recovered in Middlesbrough.

The Pᴀssat was pursued by police after being located, but the pursuit was brought to an end shortly before the fatal collision. PC Blades and PC Clough were not part of the original pursuit. They had been sent to the area to ᴀssist officers searching for the vehicle. Moments later, the Pᴀssat entered the A66 travelling in the wrong direction and collided with the marked police vehicle. The circumstances surrounding the decision-making and events immediately before the crash are being examined by the Independent Office for Police Conduct.

The investigation quickly expanded beyond the collision itself. Cleveland Police said there were “significant links to serious and organised criminal activity” and launched a major investigation into what happened before the crash. By August 24, twelve people had been arrested in connection with the wider investigation. The suspects included men and women aged between 19 and 61, with allegations ranging from participation in an organised crime group and possession of weapons to firearm offences, drug offences, criminal damage and ᴀssisting an offender.

Five additional arrests were later reported, bringing the total to 17 by August 25. Among the new arrests were a 16-year-old boy, an 18-year-old and a 21-year-old suspected of participating in an organised crime group, along with others investigated over allegations including ᴀssisting an offender and making threats to kill. Police stressed that the investigation remained ongoing.

Investigators have also examined reports that a property connected to Cole Worthy’s family was rammed shortly before the fatal crash. LBC reported that the damaged house was believed to belong to Worthy’s father. The incident has become part of the broader investigation into what happened in Middlesbrough that night. However, claims about rival groups and the precise motive behind the sequence of events remain matters for investigators and should not be treated as established fact.

Police have also pushed back against one early theory surrounding the tragedy. Cleveland Police said there was no evidence at that stage that people had been filming the dangerous driving specifically for TikTok. The force confirmed, however, that four of the five occupants of the Pᴀssat had previous convictions.

The idenтιтies and personal stories of the victims have brought another dimension to the tragedy. PC Matthew Blades was a married father of two and was remembered by his family as a devoted husband, father and friend. PC Tom Clough was also described by relatives as a much-loved member of his family and a dedicated public servant. Tributes from colleagues and relatives described both officers as people who had devoted themselves to protecting their communities.

There have also been tributes for the five young men who died in the Pᴀssat. Friends and relatives described them as deeply loved members of their families, while separate public gatherings were held in their memory. The contrasting reactions surrounding the victims have reflected the complexity of the tragedy, particularly as investigators continue examining allegations of criminal activity connected to the events before the crash.

The deaths of the two officers have prompted widespread support for their families. A public fundraising campaign established following the tragedy has received substantial donations, while members of the public and fellow emergency-service workers have left flowers and messages near the crash site. Their deaths were also described as a profound loss for Cleveland Police and the wider Teesside community.

The aftermath has continued into September, with funerals for the victims drawing large crowds. On September 4, hundreds of mourners gathered in Middlesbrough for the funeral of Jacob Matusiak. Roads were closed and some schools closed early because of concerns about traffic and potential disruption. Police later said the event pᴀssed without significant problems and that similar arrangements would be used for other upcoming funerals.

The A66 crash has therefore become more than an investigation into a single collision. Authorities are examining the chain of events that preceded the crash, the actions of those involved, possible links to organised criminal activity and the circumstances surrounding the police response. At the same time, the Independent Office for Police Conduct continues its investigation into the police involvement.

For the families of the seven victims, however, the investigation is only part of the story. Two police officers lost their lives while responding to an unfolding incident, while five young men also died in the same devastating collision. As detectives continue gathering evidence and questioning those connected to the wider events, many of the most important questions about what happened in the final minutes before the crash remain unanswered.
