🕊️ Kaydence Helfert is only 13, and her family is now preparing for what could be months of surgeries, treatment and rehabilitation.

Kaydence was a seventh grader heading home from school Tuesday when her life changed in a matter of seconds.

According to police in Indiana, Kaydence had been dropped off at a mobile home park and had bent down to adjust her backpack.

Another school bus entered the parking area and began turning around.

Investigators say the bus struck Kaydence and dragged her beneath the vehicle.

The injuries were devastating.

Kaydence was rushed to Riley Children’s Hospital in Indianapolis, approximately three hours from her home.

Her family says doctors immediately began working to treat a severe pelvic fracture along with serious internal injuries involving her bladder and intestines.

She underwent approximately 12 hours of intensive surgery following the incident.

Doctors removed damaged tissue, repaired internal injuries and placed a wound vacuum to ᴀssist with her recovery.

Her family says skin grafts will eventually be necessary.

And the difficult medical journey is far from over.

Kaydence is facing additional operations, including a procedure her family says involves placing a metal hip socket and ball before surgeons determine what other repairs may be needed.

Doctors have also been working to stabilize her blood pressure.

She has required additional blood and platelets and remains intubated and sedated while medical teams manage her pain and give her body time to recover.

For her mother, Angie, the reality is almost impossible to process.

The family knows that life after this accident may look very different.

“I know that she’s never going to have a normal life again,” Angie said, explaining that the family’s priority now is simply getting Kaydence back to good health — whatever “normal” may eventually mean for her.

That uncertainty is especially heartbreaking because Kaydence is only 13.

She should be thinking about school, friends, activities and the ordinary experiences of growing up.

Instead, she is spending her days in a hospital room preparing for surgeries that no child should ever have to face.

Kaydence serves on her school’s student council, and her family describes her as a girl with a big personality.

Now, the people who love her are preparing to spend roughly the next three months at the hospital as she undergoes additional surgeries, wound treatment and physical therapy.

The road ahead will not be measured in days.
