BORN WITH HAIR COVERING MUCH OF HIS BODY — JAREN’S RARE CONDITION LEFT HIS FAMILY SEARCHING FOR ANSWERS

When little Jaren was born with thick hair covering large areas of his body, his mother, Alma, was understandably frightened and confused. She also had to deal with hurtful rumors from people who did not understand why her baby looked different.
For a time, Alma even wondered whether she had somehow been responsible.
Doctors eventually identified the condition as congenital hypertrichosis, a rare disorder characterized by unusually excessive hair growth that is present from birth. Depending on the specific form, the extra hair can cover areas of the body that normally have little or fine hair.
Congenital hypertrichosis is ᴀssociated with genetic changes, and some forms can run in families. Importantly, it is not caused by something a mother did during pregnancy, and parents should not be blamed for a child being born with the condition.
