MOTHER RUSHED INTO BURNING HOME TO SAVE HER SIX CHILDREN — EMMA SCHOLS’ EXTRAORDINARY STORY OF COURAGE
In the early morning of September 3, 2019, 31-year-old Emma Schols woke to the sound of her children crying inside their burning home in Edsbyn, Sweden.
The wooden house was rapidly filling with smoke and flames, leaving the family with very little time to escape.
Emma immediately focused on one thing: getting her six children to safety.
According to reports, she moved through the burning home and helped her children escape, using her own body to shield her youngest children from the intense conditions.
The rescue came at an enormous personal cost.
Emma suffered burns across more than 90 percent of her body and spent weeks unconscious in hospital. She underwent numerous operations as doctors worked to help her recover from her extensive injuries.
When Emma eventually regained consciousness, her first concern was not herself.
She wanted to know whether her children were alive.
All six had survived.
That answer became a turning point in Emma’s long recovery. Although she faced months of rehabilitation and lasting effects from the incident, knowing her children were safe gave her another reason to keep moving forward.
Her courage later received national recognition in Sweden, where she was honored as Årets Livräddare — Lifesaver of the Year.
