Just four days before her death at age 80, Dolly Parton gave what would become one of her final public updates—and her words now sound strikingly different in retrospect.

On August 21, Parton acknowledged that she had been going through “hard times” with her health, revealing that she was still recovering from medical problems she had previously put aside while caring for her late husband, Carl Dean. Yet she insisted she was still working and looking toward the future.

“I’m still healin’, I’m still workin’,” she told PEOPLE, describing plans that included her new Nashville museum and exploring avatar technology that could allow her to continue performing in a different way. At the time, the message sounded like reᴀssurance. After her death four days later, it became something far more poignant.

Parton’s family announced that she died on August 25 following a brief battle with cancer. Her death came after a year of increasingly visible health challenges, including medical procedures, infections and the cancellation of her planned Las Vegas residency.

But there is an important distinction between what is known and what is being suggested online.

There is no verified evidence that Parton knew she was about to die or deliberately recorded a secret “last message” predicting her death. Her August 21 comments were presented as a health update, not a farewell.

Her final social-media post also carried an emotional coincidence. On August 5, she shared a throwback performance of “Islands in the Stream” with Kenny Rogers—an artist she had worked with closely and who died in 2020.

After decades of music, philanthropy and unforgettable performances, Parton’s final days have therefore prompted a painful question: Was she saying goodbye without realizing it—or was she simply doing what she had always done, facing difficult circumstances while continuing to look forward?

The evidence points to the latter.

And perhaps that makes her final words even more powerful.
