Eight members of one family are gone.
Among them were a 15-year-old boy who was preparing to begin his sophomore year and a 12-year-old girl who was getting ready for seventh grade.
Instead of shopping for school supplies, making plans with friends and looking forward to another year of growing up, their loved ones are now preparing to say goodbye.
Landon, 15, was excited about starting his sophomore year and was looking forward to getting his driver’s license this week.
His family remembers him as loving, caring and always willing to help. He was especially known for being a patient and protective big brother. ❤️
His sister Charlotte was 12 and preparing to enter seventh grade.
Family members describe her as funny, curious and fascinated by the world around her. She loved exploring and would turn over rocks looking for bugs.
“Oh, how she loved her bugs,” her family wrote. 🐞
Those ordinary childhood interests are now heartbreaking memories for the people who loved them.
According to authorities and reporting on the investigation, the tragedy unfolded Sunday, August 23, in Billings, Montana.
Police responding to reports of gunfire arrived while the home was burning. Investigators say the person believed responsible knew the victims and later died from a self-inflicted gunsH๏τ wound.
The full weight of the tragedy is difficult to comprehend.
Eight members of one family were lost.
And among those now facing unimaginable grief is Adam, the father of Landon and Charlotte.
Adam works as an Airport Rescue Firefighter.
His career has been built around responding when people are experiencing some of the worst moments of their lives — running toward emergencies when others need help most.
Now, his coworkers say, Adam is the one who needs help.
“Adam has dedicated his career to helping others on their worst days. Now, he needs our help on his.”
There are no words capable of making a loss like this disappear.
No donation can bring back a child.
No fundraiser can restore the family that existed before August 23.
But support can remind those who survived that they are not facing the aftermath completely alone.
