As the closely watched trial of Lindsay Clancy moves toward its conclusion, one legal expert believes prosecutors may face an uphill battle in securing a murder conviction.

Clancy, 36, is accused of killing her three young children — Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months — at the family’s home in Duxbury, Mᴀssachusetts, in January 2023.

The defense does not dispute that Clancy caused the children’s deaths. Instead, her lawyers argue that she was suffering from postpartum psychosis and was heavily affected by medication at the time, making her legally not criminally responsible.

Prosecutors have presented a very different picture, arguing that Clancy acted intentionally and was aware of what she was doing. A forensic psychiatrist called by the prosecution testified that he did not believe she was experiencing psychosis and believed she understood right from wrong.

The defense, meanwhile, has presented testimony about Clancy’s deteriorating mental health, including claims that she heard voices and was experiencing frightening thoughts before the children’s deaths.

Now, legal analyst and former federal prosecutor Neama Rahmani has offered his ᴀssessment of the case.

Speaking to PEOPLE, Rahmani said he believes there is “no real possibility” of a guilty verdict and predicted that the outcome could instead be an acquittal or a hung jury.

His ᴀssessment underscores just how central the question of criminal responsibility has become in the trial.

Whatever the verdict, the case has already sparked a much wider conversation about postpartum psychosis, maternal mental health and whether families and medical professionals can recognize severe psychiatric symptoms early enough to intervene.

The trial continues to draw national attention, with the focus now turning toward the jury and the difficult question of how the law should evaluate Clancy’s mental state at the time of the deaths.
