Some pH๏τographs document history.

Others seem to make history feel personal.

The pH๏τograph of Mesut Hançer holding the hand of his 15-year-old daughter Irmak became one of those images. 😢❤️

Captured in the aftermath of the devastating earthquake that struck Türkiye and Syria on February 6, 2023, the pH๏τograph showed a father sitting among the ruins of a collapsed building in Kahramanmaraş.

His orange jacket stood out against the grey concrete surrounding him.

But what drew the world’s attention was his hand.

Mesut was holding the hand of his daughter.

💔 A FATHER SEARCHING FOR HIS DAUGHTER

The earthquake measured 7.8 magnitude and caused widespread devastation across southern Türkiye and northern Syria.

In Kahramanmaraş, Mesut received some relief when he learned that his wife and three older children were safe.

But his youngest daughter, 15-year-old Irmak, had been staying at her grandmother’s home.

The building where she was staying had collapsed.

Mesut rushed to the scene.

He found Irmak beneath the ruins, with only her hand visible through the concrete.

Rescue teams had not yet arrived.

In the freezing cold and rain, Mesut remained beside his daughter.

He held her hand.

He gently caressed her fingers.

There was nothing he could do to change what had already happened.

But he could still be her father.

The following day, AFP pH๏τographer Adem Altan noticed a man in an orange jacket sitting almost motionless among the destruction.

Altan began pH๏τographing the scene from a distance.

Then Mesut looked toward him.

He quietly said:

“Take pH๏τos of my child.”

For a moment, Mesut released Irmak’s hand to show the pH๏τographer where she lay.

Then he immediately took her hand again.

The resulting pH๏τograph captured something far beyond the physical destruction surrounding them.

It captured grief.

It captured helplessness.

The recognition reflected the extraordinary power of the image to communicate a moment of human emotion without requiring a long explanation.

At first glance, the image shows destruction.
