Everyone who followed Jamie Varley’s online presence believed they were watching the story of an ideal father and a devoted couple creating the family they had always wanted. The thirty-seven-year-old design-and-technology technician turned teacher and pastoral lead at a Blackpool secondary school filled his social media with images of domestic bliss: an orderly home, professional achievements, a stable relationship with thirty-two-year-old finance sales manager John McGowan-Fazakerley, and later the celebration of adopting baby Preston. The pair met in late 2018, pursued adoption with determination, completed rigorous ᴀssessments and welcomed the nine-month-old boy in April 2023. Varley planned an extended break from work to focus on parenting. Public posts showed balloons, cakes and a wall mural proclaiming the child’s new name. To colleagues, social workers and online followers the household appeared exemplary.

That carefully constructed digital life collapsed under the weight of medical and forensic evidence presented during an eight-week trial at Preston Crown Court. Preston Davey, born 16 June 2022 and removed from his biological mother at five days old because of her extensive criminal record, arrived healthy. Within four months he had suffered repeated non-accidental injuries requiring three hospital admissions. On 27 July 2023 he was brought to Blackpool Victoria Hospital unresponsive. Varley claimed a brief unsupervised bath had led to accidental drowning, yet the child was dry, showed no signs of water aspiration, and a post-mortem catalogued forty traumatic injuries including those caused by forcible Sєxual penetration. Pathologists determined the death resulted from smothering during a Sєxual ᴀssault.
