New Search Operation in Portugal Renews Focus on Madeleine McCann Case Nearly Two Decades After Her Disappearance

Nearly two decades after three-year-old Madeleine McCann disappeared from a holiday apartment in Portugal, investigators continue to pursue new leads in one of the world’s most closely watched missing-person cases.

Madeleine vanished from the Ocean Club resort in Praia da Luz on May 3, 2007, while her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, were dining at a nearby restaurant with friends. Despite years of investigations, searches and international cooperation, her whereabouts remain unknown.

The case was thrust back into the spotlight following a major search operation carried out in southern Portugal in June 2025. Portuguese and German investigators searched numerous locations around Lagos after German prosecutors requested ᴀssistance under a European Investigation Order.

The operation focused on areas between the Ocean Club complex, where the McCann family had been staying, and a property ᴀssociated with German national Christian Brückner, the man German authorities have identified as their main suspect in the case.

Investigators examined more than 20 plots of land, abandoned structures, wells and areas of dense vegetation. Teams used ground-penetrating radar, excavators and hand tools, while firefighters were reportedly called in to help drain at least one well.

The search was one of the most substantial field operations conducted in connection with Madeleine’s disappearance in recent years. However, after several days, investigators concluded the operation without announcing any major breakthrough. Any material recovered was expected to undergo further forensic examination.

Focus remains on Christian Brückner
Brückner has remained at the center of the German investigation since authorities identified him as a suspect in 2020. Portuguese authorities formally named him a suspect in 2022.

German prosecutors have stated that they believe Brückner was responsible for Madeleine’s disappearance and that she is no longer alive. However, he has never been charged in connection with the case and has consistently denied involvement.

Brückner was previously serving a prison sentence in Germany for the 2005 rape of a 72-year-old woman in Portugal’s Algarve region. He completed that sentence and was released in September 2025.

His release did not bring an end to investigators’ interest in him. Authorities have continued monitoring developments surrounding the investigation, while British investigators with Operation Grange have remained involved.

Almost 20 years without an answer
The 2025 Portuguese search followed an earlier operation in 2023, when Portuguese, German and British authorities searched an area around the Arade reservoir. That operation also failed to produce a publicly confirmed breakthrough.

As of August 2026, the investigation remains active across Portugal, Germany and the United Kingdom. No conclusive physical evidence publicly linking an individual to Madeleine’s disappearance has been confirmed.

Madeleine’s parents have continued to campaign for answers through the Find Madeleine initiative, maintaining hope that investigators will eventually uncover what happened to their daughter.

More than 19 years after Madeleine disappeared, the case remains unresolved. Yet investigators in several countries continue to examine evidence, pursue potential leads and revisit areas that could still hold answers.

For the McCann family, the search is about more than solving one of the world’s most enduring mysteries. It is about finally discovering what happened to the little girl who disappeared from Praia da Luz—and bringing an end to nearly two decades of uncertainty.
