Why All Eyes Are On Patrick Clancy In A Trial By Social Media

Few trials in recent memory have seized the collective imagination quite like the murder trial of Lindsay Clancy. On the evening of January 24, 2023, Lindsay’s then-husband, Patrick Clancy, left their home in Duxbury, Mᴀssachusetts, to pick up medication and takeout for dinner for Lindsay and their three children.
When he returned less than an hour later, he found Lindsay lying in their backyard, barely conscious with her wrists and neck cut. She had jumped from the second-story window of their home, with Patrick testifying that after she jumped, an injured Lindsay told him she had tried to kill herself.
When paramedics arrived to help Lindsay, Patrick discovered the couple’s three children, Cora, 5, Dawson, 3, and Callan, 8 months old, in the basement, where they had been strangled with exercise bands. All three were later pronounced ᴅᴇᴀᴅ.
Lindsay has pleaded not guilty by reason of insanity, with her lawyer, Kevin Reddington, arguing that she was suffering from severe postpartum mental illness at the time of the killings.
Now, more than three years later, her trial is finally underway. Yet, it seems that two parallel proceedings are unfolding: one in a courtroom in Plymouth, Mᴀssachusetts; the other, in real time, across the vast and unruly court of TikTok.
A quick scroll through social media reveals a sprawling ecosystem of online detectives, poring over testimony, psychiatric evidence and the minutiae of the case, testing competing interpretations and constructing theories of their own.
Together, these armchair sleuths have created an ever-expanding, interactive investigation, examining the evidence in depth, presenting their theories with a veneer of earnest credibility, and building on one another’s observations.
Each video feels like an invitation to participate, to scrutinise the evidence, draw connections, and reach one’s own conclusions about a case that many have come to regard as unsolved. Anyone even slightly interested in true crime can see the appeal.
It’s important to keep in mind that Lindsay has already admitted to killing her children but maintains that she should not be held criminally responsible, arguing that she was overmedicated and suffering from postpartum psychosis. However, TikTok vigilantes have another explanation that reframes Lindsay as the victim.
The courtroom jury will eventually be asked to deliver a legal verdict. But the TikTok audience has been conducting its own trial for months, and there is little doubt that the two verdicts will differ.
Patrick Clancy, Lindsay’s ex-husband, has found himself at the centre of that online scrutiny. Commentators have ventured deep into the weeds of the case, scrutinising his testimony and the evidence, drawing attention to what they characterise as discrepancies, inconsistencies and unanswered questions.
It is easy to understand why the internet was so quick to blame Patrick. Dr Vincent Hurley, Lecturer in Criminology, suggests that social media can encourage audiences to make rapid, emotional judgments from fragments of information rather than consider the complete context.
On platforms such as TikTok, brief clips, selected images, testimony and emotional reactions can be isolated and interpreted as evidence of guilt, particularly when they appear to fit an existing narrative. In this case, growing awareness of male perpetration of domestic violence, coupled with the growing influence of the manosphere, may shape how audiences interpret Patrick and the evidence against him.
Hurley stresses that this is not about defending men; his 35 years advocating for women and children recognise the overwhelming evidence of male perpetration. Rather, the concern is why that broader reality might lead audiences to ᴀssume Patrick’s guilt before the evidence establishes it.
Ahead, we unpack the discourse surrounding Patrick Clancy and the viral “husband theory” the internet is devouring.
Unpacking The Lindsay Clancy ‘Husband Theory’

Following an interview with Patrick, The New Yorker reported that he took a “solo trip to Central America” in February 2023 before travelling to Europe, where he stayed in “youth hostels to avoid the sight of vacationing families.”

Some users criticised the timing of Patrick’s overseas trip and an alleged comment he left on a hiking trail at Manakín Waterfalls Nature Reserve in Central America, which read: “This hike was amazing. It is short, but LOTS of stairs. You will be dripping sweat. I’m not sure about the $17. I was the only one there with no one else in sight. There’s also zero cell service.”

Under a TikTok video that reposted his alleged comment, one user wrote, “hiking to release stress, yes. Stopping to leave a review, no.” One user questioned whether the account belonged to the same Patrick Clancy, to which another responded by citing The New Yorker profile alongside the account’s listed location of Duxbury, Mᴀssachusetts.
Lindsay Clancy’s Body Temperature
Lindsay Clancy’s body temperature was reportedly 82.1 degrees Fahrenheit when she arrived at the ER, a figure that has prompted numerous questions about how her temperature could have dropped so low.
One TikTok user highlighted the apparent discrepancy, writing in a video caption: “Thinking about how long it takes me, a perfusionist, to actively cool a patient to a core temp of 82 degrees Fahrenheit. It’s longer than 15 [minutes].”
Perfusionists are specialised healthcare professionals who operate the heart-lung machine during open-heart surgery and other procedures requiring cardiopulmonary bypᴀss, giving the user’s observation a particular relevance to the discussion.

Numerous other users have raised their own suspicions about her body temperature and other perceived discrepancies.
Patrick Clancy’s New Wife
Patrick Clancy has confirmed that he remarried following his divorce from Lindsay Clancy. His new wife is reportedly Dr. Rachel Danis, a reproductive endocrinologist and infertility specialist, and the couple now live in New York, tying the knot in April 2026.
According to the Daily Mail, public records show Patrick relocated from Mᴀssachusetts to Manhattan in May 2023, four months after the deaths of his children. The publication also noted that Danis and Clancy “share a pᴀssion for exercise, with pH๏τos showing the couple hiking, running and working out together as early as February 2024.”
Some users have questioned the timeline of Patrick’s relationship, with one user writing, “how do you lose your 3 children and fall in love with another person a few months later?”Lindsay Clancy court timeline

Numerous claims have also circulated alleging that Clancy has welcomed another child with Danis. However, the couple have not confirmed that they have a child together, and there is no publicly confirmed evidence that they do.
Many online users have also pointed out Lindsay and Rachel’s “similarities”, with one person commenting on TikTok, “why would her marry her doppelgänger?”
The timeline of Patrick and Rachel’s relationship is not publicly known. However, netizens have been sleuthing through old social media posts in an attempt to determine when they began dating.
Lindsay’s Apple Watch
When Lindsay’s Apple Watch was brought into the courtroom, it raised a host of questions. Her defense attorney, Kevin Reddington, presented the nightstand drawer in court, which contained several personal items, including the watch, which police had reportedly not seized.

The fact that the watch had not been examined or handled earlier fuelled a wave of unverified theories and debate across social media, with users scrutinising its significance to the precise, minute-by-minute timeline of events.

Patrick Clancy ‘Two Shoe Theory’
When Patrick left the house on January 24, 2023, he stopped at CVS Pharmacy and the restaurant ThreeV before returning home. CCTV footage from both locations has been picked apart, with some viewers claiming it appears he changed shoes between stops.
One user on TikTok noted in a voiceover: “At ThreeV the first pair looks like kind of like brown boots, maybe, with black around the bottom…but these [at CVS] look more like a grey tennis shoe with white at the bottom, a white sole…I’ve seen people on here saying that when he left CVS, he went home, changed shoes and then went to ThreeV.”
Other allegations have also circulated, with some viewers claiming the man captured on the CVS footage is actually Patrick’s friend, Kyle Carney, who testified in court. Others have focused on what they believe is an Apple Watch in the man’s hand.
“That’s literally the friend at CVS!!! I have nobody to talk to in real life about this case,” one person wrote under the video, while another commenter added: “mind you he’s holding her apple watch in his hand at CVS where he claims to have called her to confirm medicine.”

Lindsay Crushing Her Pills
Trooper Joshua McKelligan (the case officer), testified that he went to the Clancy home in the early hours of January 25, 2023, as investigators searched the property.
McKelligan testified that Clancy’s then-husband, Patrick, had told investigators before the search that she was taking psychiatric medication. However, he said police were unaware at the time that Clancy had crushed pills and ingested them as part of her suicide attempt.
The detail has since sparked discussion online, with some users questioning the idea that someone attempting suicide would crush their pills, while others have focused on the fact that Clancy was a nurse. One commenter wrote, “nurses only crush pills for someone that may have a feeding tube or youre trying to sneak in their medication.”
Evidence and testimony presented during the trial indicated that crushed pills and medication residue were ᴀssociated with a cup of lemonade found at the scene. Another commenter questioned the method, writing, “nurses don’t crush pills into acidic beverages that diminish the efficacy of said pills. The person who did that had no medical knowledge.”

Fingerprints Not Found On The Exercise Bands Or Knife
It was also noted in court that investigators found no “usable fingerprints” belonging to Lindsay on the bands or the knife found in the bedroom, which were alleged to have been used to kill her children and cut herself. The detail has confused many people online, with many users suggesting it indicated that “someone was wearing gloves.” In court, State Police Trooper Jonathan O’Loughlin explained that fingerprints might not be recovered for a variety of reasons, noting that they “could be wiped off” as they are “very, very fragile.”
Other users questioned the sequence of events, with one writing, “she did not cut herself, draw blood, clean the handle only, and then put it down to jump out the window…nobody in psychosis is trying to cover up their tracks.”
