For little Willow Dodding, learning to walk was already an exciting milestone. But at just two years old, seeing her take confident steps with a prosthetic leg became an especially emotional moment for her parents, Charlotte and James.

Willow was born with fibular hemimelia, a rare congenital condition in which the fibula—the smaller bone in the lower leg—is partially developed or completely absent.

In Willow’s case, the fibula in her right leg was absent, while the tibia and femur on that side were shorter than the corresponding bones in her other leg.

Her parents first learned about the condition during Charlotte’s 20-week pregnancy scan. The news came as a shock because they had never heard of fibular hemimelia before.

Charlotte later explained that there was no obvious reason for Willow’s condition and described it as a random genetic change.

Despite the uncertainty her family initially faced, Willow continued reaching important milestones in her own way. And when she took those first confident steps with her prosthetic leg at just two years old, it became a moment filled with pride, hope and joy. 🥹💗
