What should have been a joyful 18-week ultrasound became a moment Micheleen Clancy and her husband, Tyler, would never forget.

As they watched the screen, the ultrasound technician suddenly became quiet. Micheleen already sensed that something was wrong. Further testing confirmed their fears: their unborn son had Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome (HLHS), a serious congenital heart condition in which the left side of the heart does not develop properly.

💔 Doctors later discovered that their baby also had a cleft lip and palate, raising concerns about a possible genetic condition. Before the couple had even had time to fully process the news, they were asked whether they wanted to terminate the pregnancy.

Micheleen and Tyler looked at each other.

Their answer was immediate: they wanted to continue the pregnancy.

🧬 An amniocentesis later ruled out the most concerning genetic syndromes, giving the family a renewed sense of hope. They began researching HLHS and the complex surgeries that would likely be necessary soon after birth. Determined to give their son the best chance possible, they traveled more than 12 hours to meet a specialist they trusted and temporarily relocated so their baby could be delivered at a hospital equipped to handle complex cardiac cases.

👶 At 35 weeks, concerns about restricted growth led doctors to plan a C-section. Their son, Theodore—lovingly nicknamed Tad—was born on a Sunday evening weighing only four pounds.

Even before he was fully delivered, Tad was crying loudly, giving his parents an early glimpse of the fighting spirit that would carry him through the months ahead.

🏥 Tad spent his first seven months in the hospital. At only three days old, he underwent his first open-heart surgery. At one month, he suffered cardiac arrest. By three months, serious breathing difficulties meant he needed a tracheostomy and feeding tube.

At four months, while still critically ill, Tad underwent another major heart surgery. Just days later, doctors implanted a pacemaker to help regulate his heartbeat.

💙 Infection, complications, and setbacks continued to challenge him. Yet Tad kept fighting.

When he was finally able to leave the hospital, he still depended on a ventilator, supplemental oxygen, continuous monitoring, and several medical machines. His family faced repeated hospitalizations after coming home, but little by little, his condition began to stabilize.

🌟 By 15 months old, Tad had become an energetic, happy, and remarkably resilient little boy. He no longer required full-time ventilator support and had successfully undergone cleft lip repair.

There were still more heart procedures and years of specialist care ahead, but his progress had already surpᴀssed many expectations.

❤️ Looking back, Micheleen has acknowledged that this was never the journey she imagined for her family. Yet she says she would not change her decision.

“Tad was created for this battle,” she has said, “and I was created to be his mother for this journey of ours.”
