The disappearance of Madeleine McCann continues to haunt investigators and her family nearly 20 years after the three-year-old vanished during a family holiday in Portugal. Although authorities have identified a major suspect and carried out repeated searches, Madeleine has never been found and no one has been charged over her disappearance.

Madeleine disappeared from an apartment at the Ocean Club resort in Praia da Luz on May 3, 2007. Her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, were staying at the resort with their three children. Madeleine and her younger twin siblings had been left sleeping in the apartment while their parents ate with friends at a nearby restaurant.

When Kate McCann went to check on the children, she discovered that Madeleine was missing.

The disappearance immediately triggered a mᴀssive search operation in Portugal and eventually became an international investigation. Police examined thousands of potential sightings and followed leads across several countries, but none produced a confirmed location for Madeleine.

The investigation changed dramatically in 2020 when German prosecutors identified Christian Brückner as a suspect. German authorities said they believed Madeleine had died and that Brückner was responsible, although they did not have publicly announced evidence sufficient to bring a murder charge against him.

Brückner had lived in the Algarve and had spent time around Praia da Luz. Investigators also examined his movements and activities in the region around the time Madeleine disappeared. He has repeatedly denied involvement in the case.

In recent years, investigators have conducted several searches for physical evidence. One major operation focused on an area near the Barragem do Arade reservoir in 2023. Further searches were carried out in the Algarve in 2025. The searches demonstrated that authorities were still actively looking for evidence capable of establishing Madeleine’s fate, although no publicly announced discovery has solved the case.

British police have continued their investigation through Operation Grange, working with authorities in Germany and Portugal. In September 2025, British detectives attempted to interview Brückner, but he refused to answer their questions.

His decision came shortly before he was released from prison in Germany after completing a sentence for an unrelated crime. His release attracted renewed international attention because he remained a suspect in the Madeleine investigation despite not facing charges in connection with her disappearance.

The distinction between suspicion and proof remains crucial. Brückner has never been convicted of any offense involving Madeleine, and his refusal to speak with investigators does not establish his guilt. Authorities must still obtain evidence capable of proving what happened to Madeleine and identifying anyone responsible.

The pᴀssage of time has made the investigation more difficult, but it has not ended it. Modern forensic technology, digital evidence and international cooperation continue to give investigators opportunities to revisit old evidence and investigate new information.

For Madeleine’s parents, however, the central question has remained unchanged since 2007: where is their daughter, and what happened to her?

Kate and Gerry McCann have spent years appealing for information and supporting the continuing investigation. Their daughter would now be an adult, but there has never been a confirmed sighting of her since the night she disappeared.

The investigation therefore remains open, and authorities continue to pursue credible leads. Until Madeleine is found or sufficient evidence establishes what happened to her, one of the world’s most widely known missing-child cases will remain unresolved.
