Some news is so painful that a family can hardly understand how their world could change in only a few hours.

Just two days earlier, little Ridge Watts had celebrated turning eight months old.

His parents, Annsley and Bailey, were proud of how far their little boy had come since his birth on August 11.

They celebrated his smiles. His progress. The countless little moments that felt extraordinary because of everything Ridge had already overcome.

Then, on a beautiful Sunday morning, everything changed.

At 11:35 a.m., Ridge pᴀssed away after suddenly experiencing severe breathing difficulties. He was only eight months old.

Ridge, from Evergreen, Alabama, was born with Epidermolysis Bullosa (EB), a rare condition that causes extremely fragile skin and can also affect tissues inside the body. There is currently no cure.

From his earliest days, Ridge’s life was filled with careful treatment, patience and love.

Several times a day, Annsley and Bailey gently changed the bandages covering their son’s delicate skin. They learned every part of his care while doing everything they could to give him a childhood filled with as much happiness and normalcy as possible.

And somehow, through it all, Ridge rarely complained.

His family remembered that he hardly ever cried and was seldom fussy, even during the many difficult moments of his care.

Instead, Ridge became known for something much brighter:

His smile. 🥹💛

As he grew, his parents watched that smile appear more and more often. It became one of the brightest parts of their lives — a tiny reminder that despite everything his little body was going through, Ridge could still find moments of happiness.

But his journey brought other challenges, too.

In the months before his pᴀssing, Ridge had been receiving treatment several times a week for an infection affecting his right eye. His parents continued doing everything they could to keep him comfortable and help him move forward.

Then came the morning they will never forget.

Ridge suddenly began having difficulty breathing.

Paramedics rushed him by helicopter to Children’s of Alabama in Birmingham, where doctors immediately began working to save his life.

For 27 minutes, the medical team fought to bring him back.

But despite every effort, they could not save him.

“He was having difficulty breathing this morning,” Annsley said afterward. “When Ridge was taken off the chopper in Birmingham, doctors worked on him for 27 minutes. They couldn’t get him back.”

For his parents, the speed of everything that happened is almost impossible to comprehend.

“It happened so fast,” Annsley said.

Just two days earlier, they had been celebrating eight months with the little boy who had already overcome so much.

Now, they are left holding memories of a baby who taught them that extraordinary courage can live inside the tiniest of hearts.

Ridge’s life was far too short.

But in those eight months, he endured countless hours of treatment, lived with a condition that has no cure, faced additional health challenges and continued to show his family a strength far beyond his years.

And through it all, he kept smiling. 🕊️

For Annsley and Bailey, that smile will forever be one of their most precious memories.

Their little boy may no longer be in their arms, but the courage, love and joy he brought into their lives will remain with them forever.

Perhaps that is Ridge’s lasting gift:
