For young Harrison Humphries of Georgia, medical care has been part of his life since before he was born. Harrison has phocomelia, a rare congenital condition affecting limb development, along with significant differences in his lower limbs and scoliosis. His complex needs have required ongoing orthopedic care from specialists at Children’s Healthcare of Atlanta (CHOA).

👶 During a 22-week prenatal scan, Harrison’s parents learned that their baby had major limb differences. He was also born with an omphalocele, a condition in which abdominal organs protrude through an opening near the belly ʙuттon. The defect was gradually reduced and surgically repaired when Harrison was around two years old.

🩻 His scoliosis has required regular monitoring as he has grown, including repeated imaging, along with bracing or casting when necessary. Traditionally, full-spine X-rays required Harrison to lie completely flat on his back—a difficult and uncomfortable position because of his limb differences and spinal curvature. The scans were nevertheless important for tracking his spine and helping doctors determine the best course of treatment.

✨ A recent appointment brought an encouraging change. Harrison’s orthopedic team at CHOA used an advanced low-dose X-ray system with 3D modeling capabilities, allowing him to remain comfortably seated during the scan rather than lying flat.

It can be particularly helpful for children with limb differences, scoliosis, and other orthopedic conditions. For Harrison, the ability to undergo an important examination in a more natural and comfortable position made a meaningful difference.
