💗🙏 Two Hearts, One Family: Baby Olivia Fights Forward While Her Mother Faces a Heart Battle of Her Own

For the Smith family of Southside, Alabama, the past several months have been filled with hospital rooms, major surgeries, uncertainty and more courage than any family should have to find.

At the center of their story is little Olivia Smith, an eight-month-old baby who was born with a serious congenital heart condition.

Olivia arrived prematurely on December 16 at 33 weeks and three days of pregnancy.

She weighed just 4 pounds, 5 ounces.

Soon after her birth, doctors diagnosed her with Hypoplastic Left Heart Syndrome, a complex heart condition that affects the heart’s ability to circulate blood effectively.

For Olivia and her family, the diagnosis marked the beginning of an extraordinarily difficult medical journey.

At only four weeks old, Olivia underwent her first major open-heart surgery.

Months later, she underwent the second of three major heart surgeries planned as part of her treatment.

Her family spent months navigating hospital stays, procedures and the constant uncertainty that comes with caring for a child with a serious heart condition.

Then, earlier this summer, they finally received a piece of good news.

Following G-tube surgery, Olivia was discharged from the hospital on June 15.

For the Smith family, bringing their little girl home was a moment they had been waiting and praying for.

Since returning home, Olivia’s mother, Summer, says her daughter has been doing significantly better.

She is no longer receiving fortified formula for additional calories, which has helped reduce some of the feeding difficulties she had been experiencing.

The family has also begun introducing small tastes of purees.

Slowly but surely, Olivia is discovering more of the ordinary experiences of babyhood.

She is also taking fewer medications and is now down to five.

Her oxygen levels can still drop when she becomes extremely upset, but her family is continuing to work with her care team and remains encouraged by her progress.

For the first time in a long time, there are more moments at home to celebrate.

But while Olivia continues her recovery, another difficult medical challenge is unfolding inside the same family.

Her mother, Summer, has been diagnosed with aortic stenosis, a condition involving narrowing of a heart valve.

Doctors have told Summer that she will likely need open-heart surgery in the future, potentially before December.

She says she has recently experienced more chest pain and shortness of breath, even during simple daily activities.

The situation has left her understandably frightened.

“I’m terrified and full of anxiety,” Summer explained, while also emphasizing that much of her worry comes from thinking about her family.

It is an extraordinary situation for a mother who has spent months focusing on her baby’s heart to suddenly confront serious concerns about her own.

Yet Summer continues to care for Olivia while preparing for what may be another major chapter for the family.

For the Smiths, there is no easy answer or simple timeline.

There is only one day at a time.

One milestone at a time.

One hopeful update at a time.

Olivia has already shown remarkable resilience in her first eight months of life.

She has undergone major heart procedures, spent months in the hospital and now gets to experience life at home with her family.

And Summer is hoping to remain strong for her daughter while receiving the medical care she needs herself.
