In the carefully curated world of social media, Jamie Varley presented himself as the embodiment of modern parental success. A secondary school teacher who had risen to the position of designated safeguarding lead and head of year at South Shore Academy in Blackpool, he appeared to have built the ideal life with his partner. Their Instagram account overflowed with images of a spotless home, a beloved dog, professional achievements, and the joyful arrival of their adopted son, Preston Davey. Friends, colleagues, and even social workers saw a devoted couple who had navigated the complex adoption process with care and commitment. Varley had taken time away from teaching to focus on fatherhood. The posts radiated warmth, stability, and the quiet pride of two men finally realizing their dream of family. Yet behind that polished digital veneer lay a reality so calculated and cruel that when the truth emerged in an eight-week trial at Preston Crown Court, it left the nation reeling and forced a rare and devastating judicial response.

Preston Davey was born in June 2022 and placed into foster care just five days later. By the age of nine months he had been matched with Varley and John McGowan-Fazakerley, who were approved as adoptive parents early in 2023. The little boy moved into their Blackpool home in April of that year. Within four months he was ᴅᴇᴀᴅ. On 27 July 2023 Varley rushed the thirteen-month-old to hospital claiming the child had accidentally drowned in the bath. Medical examination and post-mortem findings told a different story. Preston had suffered approximately forty external and internal injuries. Drowning was ruled out. The court later heard that the child had endured months of physical, Sєxual and emotional abuse while in the couple’s care. Varley was convicted of murder and multiple Sєxual offences against the infant. His partner was convicted of allowing the death of a child, child cruelty and Sєxual abuse.

Mr Justice Turner imposed a whole-life order on Varley, one of the rarest and most severe sentences available under English law. It means the former teacher will never be released from prison except in the most exceptional compᴀssionate circumstances. McGowan-Fazakerley received a twenty-five-year sentence. The judge described the case as one of the utmost gravity, noting the extreme vulnerability of the victim, the gross abuse of the trust placed in the adoptive parents, and the prolonged suffering inflicted before the fatal attack. Police investigators characterised Varley as a serial manipulator and serial liar who had used his professional charm and easy manner to reᴀssure health professionals and social workers even as injuries mounted. Detectives pointed to the stark contrast between the Instagram-ready image of domestic perfection and the arguments, exhaustion and darker realities inside the household.

What makes the case particularly chilling is the professional position Varley occupied. As a designated safeguarding lead he was trained and trusted to recognise and report risks to children. Colleagues and students had regarded him as capable and caring in his pastoral role. That same professional reputation helped him navigate the adoption process and deflect early concerns when Preston was taken to hospital on previous occasions with bruising, seizures and other injuries. The carefully constructed public persona collapsed only when the full weight of forensic and digital evidence was laid before the jury. The nation is still absorbing the scale of the deception. A man who stood in classrooms speaking about protecting the vulnerable had, in the privacy of his own home, become the greatest threat to the child placed in his care. The whole-life order ensures he will never walk free, yet the questions about how such a facade was allowed to persist for so long continue to demand answers.
