Nearly a month after the body of 18-year-old Nolan Xavier Wells was recovered from the waters near Horn Island, Mississippi, three of his friends and their legal team are returning to the remote barrier island in an effort to better understand the location where the teenager was last seen.

The visit, announced on August 6, 2026, comes as questions surrounding Wells’ d3@th remain unanswered and public attention continues to grow around the case.

Wells, a recent high school graduate and incoming college football player from Ocean Springs, Mississippi, disappeared on July 4 during a large Independence Day gathering on Horn Island.

The undeveloped barrier island sits roughly 10 miles off the Mississippi Gulf Coast and can only be reached by boat. Hundreds of young people reportedly gathered there for the holiday, and Wells arrived with a group of friends, including Warren Hudson, Jax Pitalo, and Morgan Seymour. 🚤🏝️

According to available GPS records, the group’s boat left the mainland at approximately 9:56 a.m. and reached the western end of Horn Island shortly after 11 a.m.

Wells was reportedly last seen at around 3 p.m. wearing blue swim trunks and sunglᴀsses. The boat later departed the island at approximately 4:31 p.m., without him.

Hours later, one of the friends contacted the Coast Guard at around 11 p.m. to report that Wells was missing. His family also contacted authorities, prompting a large search involving the Jackson County Sheriff’s Office, U.S. Coast Guard, National Park Service, and volunteer search teams. 🚨🔦

On the morning of July 6, a National Park Service ranger discovered a body along the island’s northwestern shoreline. The remains were positively identified as Wells the following day using dental records.

Authorities initially indicated that there was no immediate evidence suggesting foul play and said drowning was being considered as a possible cause. However, officials emphasized that the investigation remained active.

An official autopsy was conducted by the Mississippi State Medical Examiner’s Office, but the complete findings, including toxicology results, had not been publicly released as of early August. Authorities have said the evidence will eventually be presented to a grand jury.

Meanwhile, Wells’ family commissioned an independent autopsy through civil rights attorney Ben Crump. The examination was conducted by forensic pathologist Dr. Roger A. Mitchell Jr., whose preliminary findings released July 22 listed both the cause and manner of d3@th as “undetermined pending investigation.”

The report found no fractures, lacerations, or major deep-tissue injuries. However, it documented an area of red discoloration in the soft tissue near the back of Wells’ head.

Because of decomposition and the procedures performed during the earlier official autopsy, Mitchell said he was unable to fully evaluate certain areas, including the airway, lungs, and neck, for possible injuries or the presence of water.

The independent pathologist said he could not completely rule out the possibility that factors other than an accidental drowning may have contributed to Wells’ d3@th.

As the investigation continued, intense speculation spread across social media, with much of the attention focused on the three friends who had been with Wells that day.

Hudson, Pitalo, and Seymour have faced accusations, online harᴀssment, and even threats, despite not being publicly identified as suspects or charged in connection with Wells’ d3@th. ⚖️

The three friends have retained Mississippi attorney J. Tyler Cox and later added defamation attorney Edward Andrew Paltzik. Their legal team has repeatedly stated that the men are completely innocent and had no involvement in Wells’ d3@th.

Their attorneys have also begun reviewing media reports and online statements, warning that they may pursue legal action over allegations they believe are false or defamatory.

A crowdfunding campaign has been established to help fund the friends’ legal defense and potential defamation proceedings. Separately, federal authorities have charged several people from outside Mississippi in connection with alleged threats related to the case. Those charges do not accuse the three friends of involvement in Wells’ d3@th.

On August 6, Cox and Paltzik announced that they, along with Hudson, Pitalo, and Seymour, planned to return to Horn Island the following day. According to the attorneys, the purpose of the visit was to personally observe the island’s geography, terrain, and surrounding conditions rather than conduct an independent evidence-gathering operation. 🏝️🔎

Paltzik said he wanted to see the location firsthand as part of the legal team’s broader efforts to understand the circumstances surrounding Wells’ disappearance.
