22 Weeks, 17 Ounces: Russell’s Incredible Journey Home

Russell Appold Jr. entered the world at just 22 weeks, weighing only 17 ounces—a beginning so fragile that survival itself seemed uncertain.

From his very first breath, he was in the NICU at Tulane Lakeside Hospital, surrounded by machines, constant monitoring, and a team determined to give him every possible chance. 🏥

Day by day, he faced challenges most will never see.

Learning to breathe.
Learning to eat.
Learning to grow strong enough to keep going.

For 133 days, his life unfolded inside those hospital walls. Each small step forward—every ounce gained, every breath taken on his own—became a milestone worth celebrating.

Through it all, his parents stayed by his side, holding onto hope even in the most uncertain moments, and trusting in the care of the doctors and nurses who never gave up on their son. 💔➡️💛

And slowly… everything began to change.

Russell grew stronger.

What once felt impossible became real.

He went home.

Today, his journey stands as a powerful reminder of how far neonatal care has come—and how even the smallest, most fragile lives can fight their way forward.

Because sometimes, strength isn’t measured in size…
but in the will to survive.
