The mysterious death of 18-year-old Nolan Wells continues to leave investigators and his family searching for answers, as newly revealed information sheds additional light on the hours before he disappeared during a Fourth of July weekend trip to Mississippi’s Horn Island.

What began as a holiday boating excursion with friends ended in tragedy after Wells vanished on the remote barrier island.

A large-scale search involving multiple agencies was launched, and on July 6, his body was recovered from the waters near Horn Island’s shoreline. Nearly a month later, authorities have still not publicly determined how the teenager died. 💔

Now, a previously undisclosed email obtained by reporters has added another layer of uncertainty to the investigation.

The message, sent on July 5 by the Mississippi Department of Marine Resources Marine Patrol to the U.S. Coast Guard while the search was still underway, included Wells’ physical description, his last known location, and a brief note stating:

“Alcohol intake: Heavy.”

The email does not explain where that information originated or how it was verified, and officials have not publicly identified the source of the statement.

Investigators have also not announced an official cause or manner of death.

The Mississippi State Medical Examiner is still awaiting the completion of autopsy and toxicology testing before releasing final findings.

While that process continues, Wells’ family commissioned an independent autopsy in hopes of gaining additional answers.

The examination was conducted by Dr. Roger Mitchell, who concluded that both the cause and manner of death remain undetermined pending further investigation.

During a news conference, civil rights attorney Ben Crump, who represents the Wells family, also highlighted an area of red discoloration observed on the back of Nolan’s head, saying it was among the findings that warranted additional review.

📋 Television host Nancy Grace later discussed the independent autopsy on her program, noting what she described as deep red discoloration beneath the tissue near the occipital bone.

She also pointed out that, according to the independent pathologist, Wells’ lungs and throat were not available for examination during the private autopsy.

At the same time, Grace emphasized that these observations alone do not establish what happened and that numerous accidental explanations remain possible. She said she could not determine the cause of Nolan’s death based on the available information.

Meanwhile, Jackson County officials have defended the investigation, stating that detectives are following standard procedures and waiting for complete forensic results before reaching any conclusions.

Authorities have not announced whether they suspect foul play.
