💛🎗️ Doctors Thought It Was Just Pregnancy—But Poppy Was Actually Battling a Rare Form of Cancer
What began as persistent headaches during pregnancy turned into a life-changing diagnosis for one young mother after doctors discovered she was living with a rare form of Ewing sarcoma.
At 34 weeks pregnant, Poppy finally received the answer she had been desperately searching for. Although hearing the word “cancer” was devastating, she says it also brought an unexpected sense of relief after weeks of feeling that her symptoms were being dismissed.
“As strange as it sounds, it was such a relief when I was diagnosed,” Poppy recalled. “I had to fight to get someone to believe me. At 34 weeks pregnant, I felt like I was being a nuisance. Knowing there was a reason for everything I was experiencing made me realize I wasn’t imagining it.”
Her symptoms had started months earlier with severe headaches unlike anything she had ever experienced.

Soon afterward, she noticed a lump along her jaw.
Believing the swelling was caused by a problematic wisdom tooth, she underwent a tooth extraction, hoping it would solve the issue.
Instead, her symptoms continued to worsen.
Poppy began experiencing frequent nosebleeds, overwhelming fatigue, and relentless headaches. Because she was pregnant, she was repeatedly reá´€ssured that these changes were simply part of pregnancy.
But deep down, she knew something wasn’t right.
Then she noticed a small growth inside her nose.
Over time, it continued to enlarge until it partially blocked her airway. Doctors initially struggled to determine the cause, but after a biopsy, they finally uncovered the diagnosis: atypical Ewing sarcoma, a rare and aggressive type of cancer.
Although the diagnosis marked the beginning of an intense treatment journey, it also connected Poppy with people who would help her find hope during one of the darkest periods of her life.
She credits Youth Support Coordinator Ella and Nurse Sam from Teenage Cancer Trust with helping her regain confidence when she felt completely overwhelmed.
“At first, I couldn’t even accept my own diagnosis,” she said. “I couldn’t listen to anyone else’s story because I was still trying to understand my own. I didn’t even want to leave my room unless my mum or my partner was with me.”
Little by little, however, things began to change.
A social event organized by the charity encouraged Poppy to step outside her room for the first time, where she met other young people facing cancer with remarkable courage and resilience.
“I was amazed by how they kept living their lives,” she said. “Seeing their strength gave me hope that I could find mine too.”
Looking back on everything she has endured, Poppy says there is never a perfect time to face a serious illness—but she remains deeply grateful for the support that carried her through.
“There’s no good time for something like this,” she reflected. “But being cared for in a Teenage Cancer Trust unit made such a difference. The support I received was incredible, and I’ll always be thankful for the people who helped me through it.”
Today, Poppy’s story serves as a powerful reminder to trust your instincts when something doesn’t feel right. What many believed were ordinary pregnancy symptoms turned out to be a rare cancer diagnosis, and her determination to keep searching for answers ultimately changed the course of her journey.
Through unimaginable uncertainty, she discovered not only the importance of early diagnosis but also the life-changing power of compá´€ssion, community, and hope.
