When Sadie Rutenberg was born on November 11 in Seattle, Washington, her parents were told to prepare for the unthinkable.

Born with a rare and life-threatening heart defect, Sadie faced impossible odds from her very first breath. After two unsuccessful surgeries, doctors told her parents, Lee’or and Wendy Rutenberg, that conventional treatments had run out.

Their daughter’s final hope rested on a tiny heart valve that had never before been implanted in a child and had not yet received approval from the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA).

Nearly three years later, that extraordinary decision has become a remarkable success story.

Today, Sadie is a joyful, energetic three-year-old whose incredible recovery continues to inspire families around the world.

“If you looked at Sadie, you would never believe everything she’s been through,” her father, Lee’or, told People. “She’s this vibrant, playful, energetic little girl. She has more energy than I do.”
Sadie was born with complete atrioventricular canal defect (CAVC), a rare congenital heart condition affecting approximately two out of every 10,000 babies born in the United States each year.

The condition leaves a large opening in the center of the heart, allowing oxygen-rich and oxygen-poor blood to mix, making it difficult for the body to receive the oxygen it needs.

For her parents, every day during Sadie’s first year felt uncertain.

“Every single day during that first year of her life, I’d wake up wondering if that was going to be the day we’d receive heartbreaking news,” Lee’or recalled. “There were no guarantees. The doctors were very honest that the outcome remained uncertain.”
When Sadie was just six months old, she underwent her third open-heart surgery after two previous procedures failed to correct the condition.

It was then that her surgeon presented an extraordinary possibility.

The medical team asked whether the family would allow Sadie to become the first child to receive the Abbott Masters 15 mm heart valve as part of a clinical trial.

At the time, the valve had not yet been approved by the FDA.

“She was going to be the first child in this trial to receive it,” Lee’or said. “That was both exciting and overwhelming because it could make all the difference for our daughter’s future. I still get shivers talking about it.”
The Abbott Masters 15 mm is the smallest heart valve ever created specifically for babies and infants. Following successful clinical testing, it received FDA approval earlier this year, offering new hope for children born with complex heart conditions.

Even on the day of surgery, the family faced another terrifying uncertainty.

“There are a few moments where you can hardly breathe because you don’t know what’s coming next,” Lee’or said. “Then Dr. Chen tells you everything worked, and you finally let out the biggest sigh of relief.”
He described the overwhelming realization that his daughter would now have the opportunity to experience milestones they once feared she’d never reach.

“You start thinking about all the things you once feared your daughter might never get to experience… and suddenly you realize she has the chance to do them. It’s almost impossible to put into words how happy that makes me.”
Following the groundbreaking procedure, Sadie remained hospitalized for two months as she recovered.

In total, she underwent five open-heart surgeries and also received a pacemaker.

During one difficult chapter of her recovery, she received a memorable surprise through the Make-A-Wish Foundation, meeting actors Chris Pratt and Chris Evans, whose visit brought smiles during an incredibly challenging time.

Today, Sadie is enjoying life just like any other energetic toddler.

She loves visiting the playground, going to the zoo, and cheering on the New England Patriots alongside her father.

“She keeps us on our toes,” Lee’or said. “She always wants to do things like go to the playground or the zoo. She absolutely loves the zoo.”
“She can’t get enough of life. She’s never let any of this hold her back. She’s just the sweetest and happiest little girl.”
Once given almost no chance of survival, Sadie is now living proof of how medical innovation, determination, and hope can come together to change a child’s future forever. Her remarkable journey is offering new hope to countless families facing similar battles around the world.
