A four-month-old baby from Virginia is showing incredible strength as she battles a rare and life-threatening lung disorder. Now, her family is holding onto hope that a tiny pair of donor lungs could give her the chance to grow up, laugh, and experience the childhood every child deserves.

Little Kylie Overfield has spent nearly her entire life in hospitals. Since her birth, she has been treated at four different medical centers across two states. Today, she remains at Texas Children’s Hospital, where doctors are waiting for a rare opportunity—a pair of donor lungs small enough to fit her tiny body.

Her mother, Ashley Overfield, says there were countless moments when she feared she might lose her daughter.

“So many times, in the beginning, I wasn’t know if she would make it through the night,” Ashley shared. “I would sit there holding her tiny hand in the NICU, wondering if she would stop breathing. It was incredibly frightening.”

That uncertainty has become part of the family’s daily life, but so has hope.

Kylie was born in November in Richmond, Virginia. Ashley immediately sensed something was wrong.

“As soon as they placed her on my chest, she started turning purple. I became very worried and called the nurse,” she recalled.
After being transferred between two hospitals, doctors diagnosed Kylie with surfactant protein deficiency, an extremely rare genetic lung disorder that prevents the lungs from functioning properly and can cause repeated lung collapse.

Doctors warned the family that the condition could dramatically shorten her life expectancy. At one point, comfort care was even discussed. But Kylie has continued to surprise everyone with her determination, fighting through each day and surpᴀssing expectations.

“I couldn’t accept that,” Ashley said. “I didn’t want to imagine holding my baby through her final moments. As long as she keeps fighting, I’ll keep fighting too.”
Refusing to give up, the family searched for more treatment options before eventually arriving at Texas Children’s Hospital, one of the nation’s leading pediatric transplant centers.

Now, the biggest obstacle is finding lungs small enough for an infant.

Dr. David S. Moreno-McNeill, a pediatric pulmonologist, emphasized just how rare and important organ donation is for children like Kylie.

“Organ donation is an incredibly selfless gift that gives families hope,” he explained. “For babies, this is an exceptionally rare procedure. Without a transplant, these children have very limited options. A transplant offers them a new chance at life. It truly feels like a miracle.”
Kylie is currently one of only about 20 children in the United States waiting for a lung transplant. Without a suitable donor, doctors worry she may not live to celebrate her first birthday. If she eventually requires life support, it could also reduce her chances of receiving a transplant.

Despite the uncertainty, Ashley continues to believe that the miracle her daughter needs could arrive at any moment.

“I never want another family to experience the loss of a child,” she said. “That’s unimaginable. But if they ever face that situation, I hope they can find comfort in knowing their decision could help save my daughter.”
The family’s life has been placed on hold while they wait. Ashley and her fiancé had planned to get married last December, but postponed their wedding to focus entirely on Kylie’s care.

Now, they hope to celebrate their marriage in their daughter’s hospital room at Texas Children’s next month—a reminder that even in the midst of unimaginable challenges, hope and love continue to shine through.

As Kylie continues her courageous fight, her story has become a powerful reminder of the life-changing impact of organ donation and the extraordinary resilience that can be found in even the smallest hearts.
