Years before a Michigan woman was killed alongside her six children in an apparent murder-suicide carried out by her husband, she claimed in Reddit posts that he had previously had an affair.

On July 24, Kristopher Karolkiewicz, 47, fatally sH๏τ his wife, Amanda “Mandy” Karolkiewicz, 39, and their six children — a 15-year-old son, a 12-year-old son, an 11-year-old son, 11-year-old twin daughters and a 5-year-old son — at the family’s Grand Haven Township home, according to authorities and family members. Kristopher then reportedly set the house on fire and turned the gun on himself.

In 2024, Mandy posted about her personal life on Reddit under the username “MandyK1179.” She shared that she met her husband while working as an intern. (Mandy’s posts were first reported by The Detroit News and The Holland Sentinel, which independently verified that the account belonged to her.)

“He was divorced and older than me … fast forward ten years and five kids, he was cheating with the intern again — the same age I was when I was the intern,” she wrote.

She also wrote that after a year of “self-loathing,” she realized she shouldn’t be the one suffering for his actions and came to understand that she had always been the person who “showed up for myself my whole entire life.”

Despite the affair, Mandy wrote in another post that she chose to work toward reconciliation for the sake of their children.

“I kept telling myself, ‘I love my kids more than I hate my husband right now.’ They have no idea — I faked it ‘till we made it. We’re in a much better place 4.5 years out, but it’s still a fight to stay in a healthy place,” she wrote.

Ottawa County Sheriff’s Capt. Jacob Sparks said at a press conference that the investigation into the fatal incident would take time and added that the department was “trying to get answers” for everyone who knew and cared about the family, WOOD reported.

“This is an unspeakable tragedy, that we may never completely understand why it happened. But we will do our best to find the answers and to honor the memory of those victims,” Capt. Sparks said.

Mandy, a teacher, was remembered by her parents as “a kind and devoted soul who loved her family and her students,” according to a statement they previously shared with The Detroit News.
