Nearly two decades after three-year-old Madeleine McCann vanished during a family holiday in Portugal, one of the world’s most closely followed missing-person cases remains unresolved.

On the evening of May 3, 2007, Madeleine disappeared from her family’s holiday apartment at the Ocean Club resort in Praia da Luz while her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, were dining with friends nearby. When they returned to check on their children later that night, Madeleine had vanished without a trace. Despite years of investigations across multiple countries, she has never been found.

The disappearance sparked one of the largest and most widely publicized missing-person investigations in modern history. Portuguese authorities initially named Madeleine’s parents as formal suspects before later clearing them. The investigation was suspended, reopened, and eventually expanded internationally. In 2013, London’s Metropolitan Police launched Operation Grange, a dedicated investigation that continues today.

A major turning point came in June 2020 when German prosecutors publicly identified Christian Brueckner, a convicted Sєx offender, as their prime suspect. Investigators stated they believed Madeleine had died and alleged that Brueckner was responsible for her abduction and murder. At the time, he was already serving a prison sentence in Germany.

In April 2022, Portuguese prosecutors officially declared Brueckner a formal suspect, citing what they described as strong indications of criminal involvement. The decision came shortly before a legal ᴅᴇᴀᴅline that could have affected certain investigative procedures under Portuguese law. Brueckner has consistently denied any involvement and has never been charged in connection with Madeleine’s disappearance.

Brueckner had a lengthy criminal record in Portugal’s Algarve region around the time Madeleine disappeared. He was later convicted in Germany for the 2005 ᴀssault of a 72-year-old American woman in Praia da Luz and sentenced to seven years in prison. He was also investigated in several other Sєxual offense cases, although some ended in acquittals.

After completing his prison sentence, Brueckner was released from a prison near Hanover in September 2025. Authorities placed him under electronic monitoring, but his release raised concerns among investigators that he could become more difficult to track or potentially leave Germany.

Since then, the investigation has continued to evolve. Throughout 2025 and into 2026, German and British investigators exchanged additional evidence and case material. Reports indicated that Scotland Yard’s Operation Grange team received an extensive dossier from German prosecutors containing new leads centered on Brueckner.

British authorities have explored the possibility of extraditing Brueckner to the United Kingdom so he could face charges related to Madeleine’s disappearance. However, as of mid-2026, no extradition has taken place, and Brueckner remains free in Germany while under official monitoring.

Portuguese investigators also carried out additional searches in the Algarve during 2025 at Germany’s request, although no significant public breakthroughs were announced. German prosecutors continue to investigate the case as a homicide, while British authorities officially classify it as a missing-person investigation and continue working closely with their German counterparts.

Madeleine would now be 23 years old. Throughout the years, her parents have remained determined to find answers and bring whoever is responsible to justice.

Today, the case remains unsolved. No body has ever been recovered, no one has been charged over Madeleine’s disappearance, and the events of that night in May 2007 remain one of the greatest mysteries in modern criminal history.

Investigators in the UK, Germany, and Portugal say the investigation is still active, with the possibility of future legal action depending on newly gathered evidence and the outcome of ongoing extradition efforts.
