On the evening of 3 May 2007, three-year-old Madeleine McCann disappeared from her family’s holiday apartment at the Ocean Club resort in Praia da Luz, on Portugal’s Algarve coast. Her parents, Kate and Gerry McCann, had left her and her twin siblings asleep while they dined nearby with friends. When they checked on the children later that night, Madeleine was gone. Despite one of the largest and most publicised missing-persons investigations in modern history, she has never been found.

For years the case generated intense media attention, multiple police inquiries in Portugal and the UK, civil legal battles, and endless public speculation. Portuguese police initially treated the parents as formal suspects (“arguidos”) before clearing them. Investigations were suspended and later reopened. In 2013 the UK’s Metropolitan Police launched Operation Grange, a dedicated review that continues to this day.

A major shift came in June 2020, when German prosecutors publicly named Christian Brueckner (also referred to as Christian B.), a convicted Sєx offender, as their prime suspect. German authorities stated they believed Madeleine was ᴅᴇᴀᴅ and that Brueckner was responsible for her abduction and murder. At the time he was already serving a prison sentence in Germany.

In April 2022, Portuguese prosecutors in Faro formally declared Brueckner an “arguido” — a named formal suspect — based on what they described as “strong indications” of a crime. The move came just before the 15-year mark that could have limited certain legal steps under Portuguese law. Brueckner has always denied any involvement and has never been charged in connection with Madeleine’s disappearance.

Brueckner had a documented criminal history in the Algarve region around the time of the disappearance. He was later convicted in Germany of the 2005 rape of a 72-year-old American woman in Praia da Luz and received a seven-year sentence. He also faced other investigations for Sєxual offences, some of which resulted in acquittals.

In September 2025, after completing his rape sentence, Brueckner was released from a prison near Hanover in northern Germany. He was fitted with an electronic tag and placed under surveillance. His release raised concerns among investigators that he could become harder to monitor or might attempt to leave the country.

Since his release, developments have continued. In 2025 and into 2026, German and British authorities exchanged further material. Reports in 2026 indicated that Scotland Yard’s Operation Grange team received a substantial dossier from German investigators containing additional leads and evidence focused on Brueckner. British police have explored the possibility of extraditing him to the United Kingdom so he can be formally charged and stand trial for Madeleine’s abduction and murder. As of mid-2026, no such extradition has been completed and Brueckner remains free in Germany under monitoring.

Portuguese authorities conducted further searches in the Algarve area in 2025 at the request of German investigators, though no major breakthroughs were publicly announced. German prosecutors continue to treat the case as a murder investigation and maintain that Brueckner is their primary suspect. British police have kept the inquiry open as a missing-persons case while cooperating closely with their German counterparts.

Madeleine would now be 23 years old. Her parents have repeatedly stated that they still hope for answers and for those responsible to be held accountable. The case remains unsolved: no body has been recovered, no charges have been brought against Brueckner or anyone else in connection with the disappearance, and the full circumstances of what happened on the night of 3 May 2007 are still unknown.

Investigators on both sides of the Channel have indicated that work continues, with the possibility of future legal action depending on the strength of the accumulated evidence and the outcome of any extradition efforts.
