In a case that has left communities reeling and reignited urgent conversations about child protection, adoption oversight, and the hidden dangers behind closed doors, a North Carolina couple has finally faced justice for the unimaginable suffering and death of their young adopted son. Four-year-old Skyler Wilson endured prolonged torture before his tragic pᴀssing in January 2023, and on July 8-10, 2026, his adoptive parents received lengthy prison sentences that many hope will bring a small sense of closure to those devastated by this story.

Joseph Paul Wilson, 45, a chiropractor, and his wife Jodi Ann Wilson, 42, pleaded guilty in Surry County Superior Court to second-degree murder along with multiple child abuse-related charges. The pair was sentenced to a combined total of approximately 32 to 40 years in state prison, with Jodi receiving an additional consecutive term for conspiracy to commit felony child abuse. Both waived their right to appeal as part of the plea deal.

According to prosecutors, the Wilsons subjected not only Skyler but also his siblings to disturbing “exorcism” rituals and extreme disciplinary methods drawn from controversial books on alternative parenting for adopted children. These practices escalated horrifically on January 5, 2023, at the family’s home in Mount Airy, near the Virginia border. Jodi allegedly wrapped the already malnourished little boy тιԍнтly in a bedsheet and used duct tape to restrain him face-down on the floor for several agonizing hours. Joseph reportedly purchased the duct tape and Ace bandages specifically for this purpose that same day and failed to stop the abuse even after seeing his son tied up during a lunch break from work.

Later, Jodi messaged her husband a pH๏τo of the helpless child in restraints with the chilling words: “Hurry home, I think I have hurt him.” When emergency services were finally called, Joseph claimed the boy was having a seizure, while a woman’s voice—believed to be Jodi’s—could be heard in the background admitting, “It’s my fault.” Skyler was rushed to the hospital but never recovered. He was removed from life support and pronounced ᴅᴇᴀᴅ on January 9, 2023. The official cause: hypoxic-ischemic brain injury from the prolonged restraint, worsened by severe malnutrition that left him too weak to survive the ordeal.
