According to Jackson County Sheriff John Ledbetter, a park ranger found the body around 8:45 a.m. on Monday, July 6, 2026, at the northwest end of the barrier island. Jackson County Coroner Bruce Lynd stated that while DNA testing would provide final confirmation, there was “no reason to believe it is not him,” as the physical description matched Wells perfectly.
