Mourners gathered at The Holy Family Church in Askea for a poignant funeral mᴀss, remembering Janis as an “easy going” young man who “took life leisurely” and was “deeply loved by his family.”

Parish Priest Fr Thomas Little spoke of Janis’s kind soul and the shock felt across the community. Symbols of his life — including a bowl from Spain, hair clippers (as he dreamed of becoming a barber), and a jersey — were brought to the altar by his siblings.

Janis’s brother Mark delivered an emotional thank you to first responders, medical staff, and the community for their support during the family’s darkest hours.

The tragedy has sparked renewed calls for greater e-scooter safety, with Fr Little appealing to authorities to improve regulations around helmets, speed limits, and protective gear.

Janis was laid to rest at St Mary’s Cemetery. His family and friends will carry his memory forever. Rest in peace, Janis.
