When Harley and Harry Crane entered the world at just 22 weeks, their chances of survival were considered almost impossible. In the UK, babies born before 24 weeks are generally not expected to live, and medical intervention is not always required at such an early stage. Yet, from the very beginning, these twins defied every expectation placed before them.

Their journey began long before their birth. For their mother, Jade Crane, 39, and her partner Steve, 52, the road to parenthood had been filled with years of hope, heartbreak, and persistence. After more than a decade of IVF treatments and eight attempts, their dream finally came true when two embryos successfully implanted—they were expecting twins.

Even then, fear never left Jade. She avoided buying baby items, afraid something might go wrong. That fear became reality at 22 weeks, when she noticed fluid leaking and rushed to Queen’s Medical Hospital in Nottingham. Doctors confirmed her membranes had ruptured and warned her she would likely lose the babies.

But Jade refused to accept it.

Just 30 hours before reaching the 23-week mark—when intervention becomes more common—the twins were born. Tiny, fragile, yet unmistakably alive. Their faint cries, described as soft as kittens, changed everything. Against standard expectations, the medical team made a critical decision: they would try to save them.

Immediately placed in intensive care, Harley and Harry began the fight of their lives.

The weeks that followed were filled with challenges—multiple surgeries, breathing complications, infections, and procedures to prevent blindness. At one point, their parents were even advised to prepare for the worst. Yet somehow, the twins kept holding on.

Day by day, they grew stronger.

Now, after more than three months in the hospital, they are doing what once seemed impossible—breathing, growing, and responding like any newborns. Their progress has astonished doctors and inspired everyone around them.

For Jade and Steve, the twins are nothing short of a miracle. “We were told there was no chance,” Jade says. “But they proved that sometimes, even the smallest fighters can win the biggest battles.”
