A Split Second Changed Everything: Toddler Suffers Severe Burns After Slow Cooker Accident

Cristina thought she had taken every precaution. She had warned her children not to touch the slow cooker after preparing dinner and believed it was safely out of the way. But one brief moment was all it took for a devastating accident to unfold.
While checking on her youngest baby, Cristina heard a loud crash followed by her toddler Lyle’s heartbreaking scream. Rushing into the kitchen, she found him covered in the scalding contents of the slow cooker after it had fallen from a small refrigerator when he opened a nearby freezer door.
Lyle suffered second-degree burns to his face, neck, shoulders, and chest. As Cristina removed his soaked shirt, she realized the severity of his injuries and immediately rushed him to a local hospital.

Because of the extent of the burns, Lyle was airlifted to a specialized burn center, where doctors performed emergency treatment. He underwent skin graft surgery using donor skin, while stem cell therapy helped his facial burns begin to heal.
Although he was able to return home after several days, his recovery was far from over. When one of the grafts failed to heal properly, surgeons performed a second operation using skin taken from his own thigh to repair the most severely burned areas.
Today, just a few months later, Lyle is recovering well. His wounds continue to heal, and he has returned to playing with his brothers and sister, though he remains understandably nervous around large cooking pots.

Cristina hopes sharing her family’s experience will encourage other parents and caregivers to keep H๏τ appliances and cookware well out of children’s reach, reminding everyone how quickly an ordinary day can turn into a medical emergency.
