Texas Teen Remembered as Hero After Saving 5-Year-Old Cousin at Lake Jacksonville

A Texas community is mourning the loss of 15-year-old Rhilynn Myers, who died after rescuing his 5-year-old cousin from deep water at Lake Jacksonville.

According to family members, the tragedy unfolded Saturday afternoon when Rhilynn noticed his 5-year-old cousin, who is autistic, drifting into deep water while the family was spending time at the lake.

Without hesitation, the Rusk teenager entered the water and swam to the child.

Family members said Rhilynn successfully reached his cousin and helped keep her safe, allowing her to be rescued from the water.

After ensuring she was out of immediate danger, Rhilynn began making his way back toward shore. During the return swim, however, he reportedly became exhausted and began struggling in the water.

Relatives said he called out for help before disappearing beneath the surface.

A nearby boater pulled Rhilynn from the lake and immediately began lifesaving efforts until first responders arrived.

He was transported to a hospital, where medical personnel continued treatment, but he later died from his injuries.

His 5-year-old cousin survived the incident.

Rhilynn was a sophomore at Rusk High School and a member of the Rusk Eagles football team. Friends, classmates, teachers, and coaches have remembered him as a kind, caring, and outgoing young man who was always willing to help others.

Family members described him as someone with a generous heart who loved making people smile and putting others before himself.

Those who knew him say his final act reflected the person he had always been—someone who instinctively stepped forward to protect others in need.

His death has deeply affected the Rusk community, where classmates, teammates, and neighbors have come together to support his family and honor his memory.

The tragedy also serves as a reminder of the importance of water safety, particularly around lakes and other natural bodies of water where conditions can change quickly. Safety officials encourage swimmers to wear properly fitted life jackets when appropriate, closely supervise children near the water, and avoid entering the water for a rescue without flotation equipment if it can be done safely.

As Rhilynn’s family mourns the unimaginable loss of a son, grandson, teammate, and friend, they have asked for continued prayers for everyone affected—especially the young cousin whose life he saved.

Although his life was cut tragically short, Rhilynn Myers is being remembered for an extraordinary act of courage and selflessness that ensured another child had the chance to come home safely.
