Federal Life Sentence Imposed in Fatal Fentanyl Overdose of 20-Year-Old Texas Woman After Prosecutors Say Defendant Filmed Her Final Hours

A federal court has sentenced a man to life in prison in connection with the 2024 fentanyl overdose death of 20-year-old Macie Joe Chastain, a case that drew widespread attention because prosecutors said the defendant recorded the young woman as her condition deteriorated instead of seeking emergency medical help.

According to investigators, emergency responders were dispatched to a residence in the Perrin Estates neighborhood of Denison, Texas, on September 5, 2024, after receiving reports of an unconscious woman.

Firefighters and emergency medical personnel immediately began CPR and other lifesaving efforts upon arrival. Despite those attempts, Macie Joe Chastain was pronounced ᴅᴇᴀᴅ at the scene.

The Dallas County Medical Examiner’s Office later determined that she died from multidrug toxicity, with fentanyl and methamphetamine among the substances identified during the investigation.

Authorities alleged that Andrew Michael Smith, 34, supplied Chastain with fentanyl-laced pills shortly before the fatal overdose.

Court records state that after Chastain began showing signs of medical distress—including labored breathing, confusion, and tremors—Smith continued recording videos of her condition for hours rather than contacting emergency services.

Prosecutors argued that during this time he continued communicating with others and arranging additional drug-related activity while Chastain’s condition worsened.

By the time first responders were notified, emergency personnel were unable to save her life.

Investigators collected digital evidence from electronic devices, analyzed the drugs involved, and interviewed witnesses as part of the investigation that ultimately led to Smith’s arrest.

On November 21, 2024, officers with the Denison Police Department, ᴀssisted by the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force, arrested Smith at a residence on East Gandy Street.

The investigation also identified Gregory Noah Honesty III as the alleged supplier who sold the fentanyl-laced pills to Smith. Authorities reported that Honesty was already in custody on bond in connection with a separate fentanyl-related murder case when he was later served with an additional murder charge related to Chastain’s death.

Federal officials said the life sentence reflects the seriousness of distributing fentanyl and the devastating consequences ᴀssociated with the synthetic opioid, which continues to contribute to overdose deaths across the United States.
