Mother Detained by ICE During Daughter’s Cancer Battle Recounts Heartbreaking Final Days Before 7-Year-Old Pᴀssed Away

A Honduran mother says the final days she shared with her only daughter were forever changed after she was detained by U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) while her child was fighting an aggressive form of cancer.

Madelyn Figueroa Córdova says she will never forget the overwhelming fear and helplessness she felt after a routine traffic stop in Jonesboro, Georgia, separated her from her gravely ill daughter.

At the time, her 7-year-old daughter, Dailyn Figueroa, was hospitalized while battling neuroblastoma, a rare and aggressive cancer that primarily affects young children. The disease had progressed despite ongoing medical treatment, and every remaining moment together had become precious.

According to Madelyn, she desperately tried to explain the situation to the immigration officers during the stop. She says she pleaded with them, telling them that her daughter was critically ill and needed her by her side.

“I told them, ‘Please, help me because my daughter was sick,'” Madelyn later recalled.

Despite her pleas, she was taken into immigration detention, leaving Dailyn without her mother’s presence during one of the most difficult moments of her young life.

After several days in custody, Madelyn was released following a peтιтion filed by the hospital where Dailyn was receiving treatment. Although she was finally reunited with her daughter, the joyful moment came with heartbreaking reality.

Their reunion lasted only a few days.

On May 7, little Dailyn lost her battle with neuroblastoma, pᴀssing away at just seven years old. Her death left her mother devastated and convinced that the forced separation during her daughter’s final days caused emotional pain that neither of them could ever recover from.

Madelyn believes that families experiencing life-threatening medical emergencies deserve compᴀssion and that immigration enforcement actions should carefully consider extraordinary humanitarian circumstances.

Their journey had begun long before that tragic traffic stop. In 2023, Madelyn and Dailyn voluntarily presented themselves at the U.S. border with one hope in mind—to find specialized medical care that could save the young girl’s life.

For nearly two years, the family fought tirelessly against a devastating illness, holding onto hope despite increasingly difficult circumstances. Although Dailyn ultimately lost her courageous battle with cancer, her story has drawn widespread attention and renewed discussions about the impact immigration detention can have on families facing medical crises.

As loved ones continue to mourn the loss of a little girl remembered for her courage, smile, and determination, Dailyn’s story serves as a heartbreaking reminder of the difficult choices and unimaginable hardships some families endure while seeking care for the people they love most.

🕊️ Rest in peace, Dailyn Figueroa. Your story will not be forgotten. ❤️
