Liam’s Miracle: Baby Born With Rare Skull Condition Survives Multiple Surgeries in Extraordinary Medical Journey

What began as a routine pregnancy scan turned into a life-changing medical journey for Hannah Sachs, after doctors discovered a rare and serious condition affecting her unborn son, Liam.

At 22 weeks pregnant, Hannah was informed that imaging revealed an abnormality on the baby’s skull. Specialists believed it to be an encephalocele, a rare birth defect in which brain tissue protrudes through an opening in the skull. At just one month old, Liam underwent his first major brain surgery, during which surgeons inserted a shunt to drain excess fluid. His mother described the experience as overwhelming and emotionally devastating, but the procedure was ultimately successful.

As Liam continued to grow, medical teams recommended a second, more complex surgery. At six months old, he underwent an 11-hour operation to remove the encephalocele and reconstruct his skull. The surgery carried significant risks due to the complexity of his condition.

Following the procedure, Liam spent 11 days recovering in the hospital. His eyes remained swollen shut for much of his recovery, and he required close monitoring as he adjusted to the changes in his condition. Despite these challenges, he gradually stabilized.

However, new concerns emerged during his recovery. Liam began experiencing irritability and frequent vomiting, prompting further medical evaluation. A physical therapist later identified developmental delays, and at 10 months old, Liam was diagnosed with cerebral palsy.

Despite the ongoing challenges, Liam’s journey is marked by remarkable resilience. From prenatal diagnosis to multiple surgeries in his first months of life, he has continued to survive against significant medical odds.
