Road Rage Tragedy: 2-Year-Old Laylah Washington Killed in Senseless Shooting

A simple family outing turned into a nightmare when an act of road rage claimed the life of 2-year-old Laylah Washington, leaving a Memphis family devastated and a community searching for answers.

On June 11, 2017, Laylah was sitting in the backseat of her mother Leslie Washington’s vehicle while waiting for her older brothers to finish work at a nearby Subway restaurant. What should have been an ordinary afternoon quickly took a tragic turn.

According to investigators, a black Chevrolet Impala drove aggressively through a shopping center parking lot and nearly collided with Leslie’s vehicle. After a brief verbal exchange, the situation appeared to be over.

However, authorities later determined that the confrontation did not end there.

As Leslie drove away with Laylah still in the car, the occupants of the Impala allegedly followed her vehicle. Moments later, gunfire erupted.

One of the bullets struck little Laylah in the head.

Terrified and desperate to save her daughter, Leslie rushed to a nearby fire station seeking emergency help. Laylah was immediately transported to a hospital, where doctors worked tirelessly to save her life.

Despite every effort, the toddler succumbed to her injuries two days later.

The heartbreaking case shocked Memphis and left Laylah’s family struggling to cope with the loss of a child whose life had barely begun.

For more than a year, investigators pursued leads but made little progress. Then, in December 2018, a Crime Stoppers tip provided a breakthrough.

Authorities arrested Tylan McCray, 21, and Brandon McCray, 19, in connection with the shooting. Tylan was charged with first-degree murder and several related offenses, while Brandon was charged as an accessory after the fact to first-degree murder.

Although the arrests brought a measure of relief, they could never erase the pain of losing an innocent child.

Laylah Washington was more than a victim of violence. She was a beloved daughter, sister, and little girl with her entire future ahead of her.

Her tragic death remains a powerful reminder of how a brief moment of anger can destroy lives forever. 💔🕊️
