💔 Memphis Road Rage Shooting Claims Life of 2-Year-Old Girl as Brothers Arrested Years Later
A tragic road rage incident in Memphis, Tennessee, that claimed the life of a two-year-old girl has left a family grieving and a community shaken, even years after arrests were finally made in the case.
Authorities confirmed the arrest of two brothers, Tylan McCray, 21, and Brandon McCray, 19, in connection with the fatal shooting of Laylah Washington, who was just two years old at the time of the incident.
The shooting occurred on June 11, 2017, in a strip mall parking lot where Laylah was seated in the backseat of her mother’s vehicle.
According to investigators, Laylah’s mother, Leslie Washington, had stopped at the location while waiting for her sons, who worked nearby. At that moment, a black Chevrolet Impala entered the parking lot and was reportedly driving recklessly, nearly striking her vehicle.
A verbal exchange followed between Leslie and the occupants of the Impala, escalating tensions in what began as a minor traffic dispute.
Shortly after, Leslie’s sons briefly entered and exited the vehicle before walking away, while Laylah remained inside with her mother.
Moments later, as Leslie drove away from the parking lot, the same Impala allegedly followed her vehicle down the road.
Investigators say that gunfire was suddenly opened from the pursuing car. During the shooting, one of the bullets struck two-year-old Laylah in the head while she was still seated inside her mother’s vehicle.
Panicked, Leslie rushed her daughter to a nearby fire station, where emergency responders provided immediate ᴀssistance before transporting Laylah to a hospital. Despite medical efforts, Laylah died two days later from her injuries.
For more than a year, the case remained unsolved, leaving the Washington family without answers and the community demanding justice.
It was not until December 21, 2018, that the Memphis Police Department made arrests in the case following a tip received through Crime Stoppers.
Tylan McCray was charged with first-degree murder, three counts of attempted murder, and additional firearm-related offenses. His brother, Brandon McCray, was also arrested in connection with the shooting.
The case has since been described as a devastating example of how quickly everyday conflicts can escalate into irreversible violence.
Laylah’s death left a lasting impact on her family, particularly her mother, who has continued to grieve the loss of her young daughter.
As the legal process continues, the case remains a painful reminder of a life taken far too soon during an act of senseless violence that never should have involved a child. 💔
