đź’ť Magda Szubanski Shares a Heartfelt Life Update Following Her Cancer Journey

Australian actress and comedian Magda Szubanski has shared a meaningful update following her recent cancer journey, revealing that she is working on a new memoir that reflects on grief, personal growth, and some of the most significant moments of her life.
The 64-year-old star, best known for her role in Kath & Kim, announced that her upcoming book, I Can’t Tell You But I Will, will explore her experiences coping with the loss of her mother and her role as a campaigner for marriage equality in Australia.
In a statement about the project, Szubanski described 2017 as a transformative year in her life.
“My mother was dying, and I was suddenly at the center of an important cultural and political moment during Australia’s same-SŃ”x marriage survey,” she said.

She explained that the memoir will examine how she learned to navigate difficult challenges while remaining true to herself and the people she hoped to represent.
A significant part of the book will also serve as a tribute to her mother, Margaret, who died in 2017 at the age of 92.
Szubanski said she wanted to honor her mother’s life and reflect on the emotional experience of caring for a loved one during their final years.
“This is the story of how I went from comedian to campaigner, from daughter to orphan, and from naĂŻve idealist to pragmatic warrior,” she said.
The memoir, her second book, is scheduled for release on September 29.
Her first memoir, Reckoning, focused on her childhood and her father Zbigniew Szubanski, whose experiences during World War II became a central part of the story. The book received widespread praise and won several awards, including Book of the Year at the 2016 Australian Book Industry Awards.
The announcement comes shortly after Szubanski shared encouraging news about her health.
Last month, she revealed that she had completed chemotherapy and that her cancer is currently in remission.
“It’s not a cure, but hopefully it means I’ll be able to keep the cancer under control for a long time,” she said, while also expressing graтιтude to fans for their support throughout her treatment.
She thanked supporters for the kindness and encouragement they had shown, saying their messages helped her both emotionally and physically during a difficult period.
Szubanski also praised Australia’s healthcare system and the medical professionals who cared for her, describing them as compá´€ssionate and world-class.
In 2025, she publicly announced that she had been diagnosed with Mantle Cell Lymphoma, a rare and aggressive form of lymphoma. She began treatment shortly afterward, including the Nordic protocol, a multi-phase treatment approach commonly used for the disease.
Throughout her journey, Szubanski has remained open about the challenges she has faced while also sharing a message of hope.
Now, with her cancer in remission and a new memoir on the way, she is entering a new chapter focused on reflection, resilience, and honoring the people and experiences that have shaped her life.
