21-Year-Old Woman Dies in Bungee Jump After Staff Allegedly Forgot to Attach Safety Cord

A 21-year-old woman lost her life during a bungee jump in Brazil after staff allegedly failed to properly attach the safety cord, causing her to fall approximately 40 meters (131 feet) from a bridge. The tragic incident has sparked widespread outrage and renewed calls for stricter safety regulations in adventure tourism.

Maria Eduarda Rodrigues de Freitas was participating in a rope jump activity at the Ponte do Esqueleto, also known as Skeleton Bridge, in Limeira, São Paulo, on June 13, 2026. Video footage shared on social media shows her being carried toward the edge of the bridge and thrown off while wearing a helmet. Moments later, a witness filming the event pointed to the unused rope still lying on the ground and shouted, “Guys, the rope!”
According to investigators, the safety line was never connected to the main bungee system. The young woman plunged to her death in what authorities are treating as a case of gross negligence. Emergency services responded immediately, but she did not survive the fall.

Six people connected to the operation were brought in for questioning. Three men, aged 27, 32, and 42, were arrested at the scene and charged with homicide with implied malice. Authorities stated that the group operating the activity was not properly regulated and lacked authorization to conduct jumps at the location.
Delegate Andrea Dantas Levy told local media that the tragedy resulted from a failure to properly verify and supervise the attachment of the rope before the jump. The defense for the accused has stated that the team was experienced and that this was the first fatal incident involving the company in years.
The incident has raised serious concerns about safety standards in unregulated adventure activities across Brazil. The Limeira City Council has filed a complaint against the federal government, citing years of known risks at the site and a lack of proper access control and protective measures.

Friends and family described Maria Eduarda as a vibrant young woman who was excited to try the experience. Her fiancé, who was present at the event, reportedly collapsed in shock upon learning of her death.
As the investigation continues, authorities are examining maintenance records, video evidence, and operational procedures. The case has prompted broader discussions about the need for stricter oversight and mandatory safety certifications for companies offering high-risk recreational activities.
For now, the community mourns the loss of a young life taken in what investigators describe as a preventable tragedy caused by a critical safety failure.
