San Francisco 49ers icon Greg Papa steps away amid shock cancer diagnosis

San Francisco 49ers announcer Greg Papa has announced he will step away from the broadcasting booth immediately due to a cancer diagnosis.

Papa has been the voice of the 49ers since 2019 and was on the call in the Bay Area for both of the team’s recent Super Bowl appearances.

Papa, 62, is also an on-air host for radio station KNBR on weekdays when not fulfilling his 49ers responsibilities.

A lengthy statement was released on Friday from Papa with his imminent plans coming into focus, as well as who will take over for him.

‘Hi, there, everyone – Greg Papa here, H๏τ of KNBR The Sports Leader’s “Papa & SIlver” and voice of the San Francisco 49ers,’ the statement began. ‘I want to share some personal news with Bay Area sports fans and my friends and colleagues. I have been diagnosed with cancer and am currently undergoing treatment.’

‘As I fully focus on my treatment and work toward a full recovery, I’m stepping away from my broadcasts but look forward to returning soon. In the meantime, I am handing The Sports Leader broadcast ball to my co-host Greg Silver, and I know he and his guest co-hosts will keep our listeners entertained and informed – and I’ll be among them; I’ll be listening!’

‘Thanks to everyone for your prayers and good wishes as I begin this fight. Go Niners!!’

The 49ers official account posted a tribute video to Papa with some of his most memorable calls.

‘Greg Papa has given us so many unforgettable calls — share your favorite moment from the booth as we send our love his way,’ the caption read.

Silver posted his own statement on social media after taking over sole hosting duties for the time being.

‘Today is not a fun day, and I know how much Greg Papa hates not being able to work right now. Our show and our entire station are here to support him throughout his entire absence, and we can’t wait to welcome him back at full strength. You’ve got this, MOFO. Stay Greg-cellent,’ Silver stated.

Papa has been a professional play-by-play-broadcaster since 1984, when his tenure with the Indiana Pacers started.

Papa has worked for franchises in three of the four major North American pro sports leagues, with stays in the booth for the Athletics and San Francisco Giants too. He has worked for a California-based team since 1986.
