‘Washed up’ veteran Cordarrelle Patterson announces Steelers cut him on day off

Veteran utility player Cordarrelle Patterson said the Steelers released him on his day off.

The 34-year-old Super Bowl champ, nicknamed “Flash” for his speed and versatility on the field, jokingly called himself “washed up” in a tweet that revealed the news on Monday.

“Breaking news,” Patterson wrote, adding four exclamation point emojis. “Pittsburgh Steelers release old washed up Cordarrelle Patterson on his day off!!!”

When someone wrote, “Took long enough,” Patterson replied with, “Right! I said the same s–t!”

He also replied to tweets from NFL reporters Mike Garafolo and Ian Rapoport about the decision after signing a two-year deal with Pittsburgh in April.

Patterson emphasized Garafolo’s tweet, which read, “How do you get fired on your day off??” with a few exclamation emojis.

Rapoport reposted Patterson’s tweet and added a GIF of Ice Cube and Chris Tucker from the movie, “Friday” — which had the famous Tucker line about getting fired on your day off.

The former first-round pick replied, “For real” with three crying-laughing emojis.

Patterson didn’t participate in the team’s offseason activities and he missed the Steelers’ first four training camp practices last week.

Patterson likely won’t be a free agent for long.

He was limited to 13 games due to an ankle injury in 2024.

Patterson rushed for 135 yards on 32 carries (4.2 yards per attempt) and caught 12 pᴀsses for 80 yards and a score last season for the Steelers. He also returned 11 kicks for 240 yards.

Retired quarterback Tom Brady previously nicknamed Patterson, “The Experiment” because of his abilities to thrive at running back, wide receiver and kick returner.

Patterson spent his first four seasons with the Vikings after they selected him with the No. 29 overall pick in the 2013 NFL Draft.

He had stints with the Raiders in 2017 and New England Patriots in 2018 — and won a Super Bowl with Brady that season.

Patterson played for the Chicago Bears from 2019-21, before playing for the Atlanta Falcons from 2022-23, and then Pittsburgh.
