Courtland Sutton lands $92 million extension with Broncos

Cortland Sutton isn’t leaving Denver anytime soon.

The standout wide receiver agreed to a four-year, $92 million extension with the Broncos on Monday, according to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, which positions the 29-year-old to be the team’s WR1 for the foreseeable future.

Sutton has spent all eight of his NFL seasons with the Broncos, and he has solidified himself as one of the better receivers in football in that stretch.

Now, he’ll continue his partnership with second-year quarterback Bo Nix, who started all 17 games in his rookie year.

Sutton had not been a full participant in training camp practices leading up to the signing, but Broncos head coach Sean Payton offered reᴀssurance that an agreement would be reached.

“He’s gotten limited reps, and I think we’re close,” Payton said after Monday’s practice. “I’m not going to speak ahead of it, but we’re real close on a contract. I think our goal, when he and I met [general manager George Paton] all along was this coming Monday. So I think there’ll be something fairly soon there.”

Just a few hours later, the deal was struck.

When Nix was told of the deal by The Athletic at training camp, he said he was “absolutely” happy for the wide receiver.

Sutton had been entering the final year of his four-year, $60.8 million deal, which he signed in 2021.

A 6-foot-4, 216-pound wideout, Sutton hauled in 81 receptions for 1,081 yards and eight touchdowns last season on a career-high 135 targets.

That marked the first time the Brenham, Texas native had eclipsed the 1,000-yard mark since 2019, when he made his lone Pro-Bowl appearance.

Sutton has enjoyed a consistent tenure with Denver, though, making at least 50 catches in each of his past four seasons.

He’ll be a key piece to the puzzle as the Broncos look to build upon a 10-7 campaign in 2024, which ended with a blowout loss to the Bills in the wild-card round.
