Bengals rookie Shemar Stewart to sign $18.9M deal and end contract standoff over ‘unfair’ clause

Bengals rookie Shemar Stewart to sign $18.9M deal and end contract standoff over 'unfair' clause

The Bengals’ standoff with Shemar Stewart is over after the rookie agreed to a four-year, $18.97million contract with Cincinnati.

Stewart was selected with the 17th overall pick of this year’s NFL draft but the defensive end soon found himself at the center of a feud with the Bengals.

Earlier this week, Stewart was pictured training at his former college, Texas A&M, amid a dispute over his rookie contract.

There were even rumors that the 21-year-old could try and return to college football.  But on Friday, it was revealed that he will sign a fully-guaranteed deal that includes a $10.4m signing bonus. He becomes the final first-round draft pick to have signed with a team.

Stewart is now set to join the Bengals almost a week after his fellow rookies reported for training camp.

The 21-year-old had skipped all of Cincinnati’s offseason workouts and missed the first few days of camp due to a dispute over the terms of his contract.

According to reports, the dispute centered around a clause that allows the Bengals to void guaranteed money, should the prospect ‘default’ on the deal through conduct that is ‘detrimental to the team’.

This could include committing a criminal offense or hurting himself during a banned activity.

Stewart argued that the clause was ‘unfair’ and accused the Bengals of treating him differently to previous first-round picks.

On Friday, however, ESPN reported that a compromise was found, with Stewart agreeing to the new language in the deal in exchange for a ‘more lucrative payout structure’ than previous No 17 picks.

Earlier this week, Bengals president Mike Brown clarified the terms of the contract, revealing that the team would want to take away guaranteed money ‘if he did something that really deserved punishment’

‘It doesn’t mean that we couldn’t agree to pay it, but we wouldn’t be forced to pay it. I don’t want to pay somebody who hypothetically could be in jail for four years at this level of pay,’ Brown said.

Cincinnati star Trey Hendrickson has still yet to report to camp amid his own contract dispute. The defensive end is set to earn just $16m in the final year of his deal.
