Ex-New York Jets and Baltimore Ravens star CJ Mosley retires from NFL at 33

Former Baltimore Ravens and New York Jets linebacker CJ Mosley has retired from the NFL at age 33 and 11 seasons in the league.

Mosley was released from his latest contract with the Jets back in March and decided not to pursue a further professional career with another team.

Mosley’s retirement falls exactly on his 33rd birthday on Thursday.

The 33-year-old was selected No 17 overall in the 2014 NFL Draft by the Ravens, staying with Baltimore until 2019.

Mosley spent the rest of his professional career with the Jets, playing the middle linebacker role for his six seasons in the Big Apple.

Mosley was only on an active NFL roster for 10 seasons, despite being affiliated with the league for one more due to opting out of the 2020 season because of the coronavirus pandemic.

For most of his NFL career, Mosley was a mainstay on the defenses he played with. His final season in Baltimore saw him take the field for 15 games before he facilitated the move to the Jets.

His first season in New York was an anomaly, as he only played in two games due to a groin issue.

In 2024, Mosley only played in four games due to neck and toe injuries, which possibly influenced his decision to hand up his shoulder pads.

Although Mosley won two national championships in his college days at Alabama, he never tasted the same level of team success in the NFL.

In both playoff runs as a pro, each with the Ravens, the team never made it past the Divisional round.

Mosley retires as a five-time Pro Bowl selection, earning second-team All-Pro honors in each of those seasons – 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, and 2022.
