The mystery of 200 thousand-year-old pyramids standing tall in the Sudan desert

1. Sudan has more pyramids than Egypt. With over 200 ancient pyramids, Sudan actually outnumbers Egypt in terms of pyramid numbers. These pyramids are mostly located in the Meroë and Nuri regions.
2. They were built by the ancient Kusнιтes. The Kingdom of Kush was a powerful civilization in Nubia that dominated Egypt during the 25th Dynasty.
3. Nubian pyramids have a different architecture. They are generally narrower and taller than Egyptian pyramids, with a greater incline and a more pointed top.
4. Many Nubian pyramids were used as royal burial sites. They were the burial sites of Kusнιтe kings, queens, and nobles – a symbol of eternal power and religion.
5. They were forgotten for centuries. After the fall of the Kush kingdom, the Nubian pyramids fell into oblivion and were only rediscovered in the 19th century.
6. Some pyramids have been destroyed by treasure hunters. In the 19th century, archaeologist Giuseppe Ferlini destroyed many pyramids at Meroë in search of gold.
7. The motifs and inscriptions are still preserved. In the tomb chambers, many drawings and hieroglyphs depicting funeral rituals and myths are still intact.
8. Today, the Nubian pyramids are a world heritage site. The Meroë pyramid area has been recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site since 2011, attracting many international archaeologists and tourists.
