Introduction to Salt: Shadow Agent

The original Salt (2010) introduced audiences to Evelyn Salt, a CIA operative accused of being a Russian sleeper agent, whose relentless action sequences and unpredictable plot twists made it a standout in the spy thriller genre. Fast forward to 2026, Salt: Shadow Agent picks up where the first film left off, thrusting Angelina Jolie’s iconic character into a new global conspiracy. Directed by Phillip Noyce, known for Patriot Games and Clear and Present Danger, this sequel amplifies the stakes with a darker, more emotional narrative and jaw-dropping stunts. Does Salt: Shadow Agent live up to its predecessor? Let’s dive into this action-packed thriller.

Plot Overview: A Web of Deception

Salt: Shadow Agent begins with Evelyn Salt (Angelina Jolie) living off the grid after the events of the first film. Still haunted by accusations of being a double agent, Salt is drawn back into the world of espionage when a mysterious organization targets her. The plot revolves around a shadowy group of ᴀssᴀssins hunting Salt across exotic locations, from the neon-lit streets of Tokyo to the desolate deserts of Morocco. As she evades capture, Salt grapples with questions about her idenтιтy: Is she a hero, a traitor, or something else entirely?

The screenplay, penned by Kurt Wimmer and Brian Helgeland, masterfully weaves a complex narrative that keeps viewers guessing. Without revealing spoilers, the story introduces new characters, including a cunning antagonist played by Daniel Craig and a conflicted ally portrayed by Lupita Nyong’o. The plot is driven by Salt’s quest to uncover a global conspiracy that threatens world stability, all while battling her own demons. The pacing is relentless, with each twist adding layers to the mystery of “Who is Salt?”

Angelina Jolie’s Stellar Performance

Angelina Jolie reprises her role as Evelyn Salt with unmatched intensity. Her portrayal combines physical prowess with emotional depth, making Salt a compelling protagonist. Jolie’s ability to shift from vulnerable to ferocious in a single scene is a testament to her skill. Whether she’s leaping from rooftops or engaging in hand-to-hand combat, Jolie performs most of her stunts, adding authenticity to the action sequences. Her chemistry with Daniel Craig’s enigmatic villain is electric, creating some of the film’s most memorable moments. Jolie’s performance anchors the film, ensuring that even amidst the chaos, Salt remains a relatable and captivating figure.

Action Sequences: Heart-Pounding and Inventive

One of Salt: Shadow Agent’s greatest strengths is its action choreography. The film features a series of exhilarating set pieces, including a high-speed chase through Tokyo’s Shibuya Crossing and a breathtaking fight atop a moving train in the Alps. Unlike many modern action films that rely heavily on CGI, Salt: Shadow Agent prioritizes practical stunts, giving the action a gritty, visceral feel. The elevator shaft sequence, reminiscent of the original film’s daring escapes, is a standout, showcasing Salt’s parkour-like agility.

The fight scenes are meticulously choreographed, blending martial arts, gunplay, and improvised weapons. A particularly inventive moment involves Salt using a drone as a makeshift explosive, highlighting her resourcefulness. While some sequences push the boundaries of believability, the film embraces its over-the-top nature, much like the James Bond or Mission: Impossible franchises. Fans of high-adrenaline action will find plenty to love here.

Themes and Emotional Core

Beyond the action, Salt: Shadow Agent explores deeper themes of trust, idenтιтy, and redemption. The film delves into Salt’s backstory through well-placed flashbacks, revealing more about her upbringing and the psychological toll of her double life. These moments add emotional weight, making Salt more than just an action hero. Her struggle to reconcile her loyalties—whether to her country, her loved ones, or herself—resonates throughout the film. Lupita Nyong’o’s character, a fellow operative with her own murky past, serves as a foil, highlighting the cost of living in a world where trust is a luxury.

Cinematography and Soundtrack

Cinematographer Robert Elswit (Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation) delivers stunning visuals, capturing the diverse settings with a mix of sleek urban landscapes and stark, desolate environments. The film’s color palette shifts from vibrant neon hues to muted grays, reflecting Salt’s emotional journey. The action is sH๏τ with clarity, avoiding the shaky cam trend that plagues some modern thrillers.

James Newton Howard’s score complements the film’s intensity, blending orchestral swells with electronic beats. The soundtrack pays homage to classic spy thrillers while maintaining a modern edge, amplifying the tension during chase scenes and softening during introspective moments.

Weaknesses: Plot Holes and Pacing

While Salt: Shadow Agent excels in many areas, it’s not without flaws. The plot, though engaging, occasionally stretches credulity. Some twists feel telegraphed, and certain storylines, such as a subplot involving a tech billionaire, resolve too neatly. Additionally, the film’s breakneck pace leaves little room for character development outside of Salt and the main supporting cast. Fans hoping for deeper exploration of secondary characters may feel shortchanged.

The film also leans heavily on the “is she or isn’t she a traitor?” question, which, while effective in the first film, feels slightly repeтιтive here. However, the emotional stakes and new revelations about Salt’s past keep the narrative fresh enough to avoid feeling like a rehash.

Comparisons to Other Spy Thrillers

Salt: Shadow Agent invites comparisons to films like The Bourne Idenтιтy and Atomic Blonde. Like Jason Bourne, Salt is a lone operative navigating a world of deception, but Jolie’s charisma and the film’s focus on her emotional journey set it apart. Compared to Atomic Blonde, Salt: Shadow Agent is less stylized but more grounded in its espionage elements. The film also nods to the original Salt by reviving the Cold War paranoia that made the first film stand out, updating it for a modern geopolitical landscape.

Why You Should Watch Salt: Shadow Agent

Salt: Shadow Agent is a thrilling addition to the spy genre, offering a perfect blend of action, suspense, and emotional depth. Angelina Jolie’s commanding performance, coupled with Phillip Noyce’s ᴀssured direction, makes this a standout sequel. While it has minor flaws, the film’s relentless energy and surprising twists make it a must-watch for fans of espionage thrillers. Whether you’re a longtime fan of the original Salt or a newcomer, this film delivers an exhilarating ride that will leave you eager for more.

Final Verdict

Salt: Shadow Agent (2026) is a worthy sequel that builds on the strengths of the original while introducing new layers to Evelyn Salt’s story. With its heart-pounding action, stellar performances, and thought-provoking themes, it’s a film that both entertains and resonates. While not perfect, it’s a thrilling addition to Angelina Jolie’s action-hero repertoire and a testament to her enduring star power.

A Farmer’s Misplaced Hammer Led to the Largest Roman Treasure in Britain

November 16, 1992 was the day which changed Suffolk-resident Eric Lawes’ life in a huge way. What he thought would have been an innocent search for a hammer he had misplaced on his farm in Hoxne Village, Suffolk, England ended up bringing him much more than he had bargained for — namely, uncovering the hiding spot of a long-hidden treasure. Based on the Guardian’s coverage of the story, Eric Lawes had been previously gifted a metal detector upon his retirement as a parting token. He decided to put his retirement gift to good use in order to locate the hammer which he had had some trouble finding. According to a 2018 Smithsonian Magazine article, when the device started recording that there was a strong signal coming from the earth, he knew that he was about to discover something big. As he started digging, it soon became clear to him that he had unearthed a treasure trove.

The Guardian reports that, when Lawes saw that his preliminary digging had yielded a few gold coins and silver spoons, he immediately contacted both the local archaeological society and the police department. Archaeologists came to the property the following day and had the area of earth holding the treasure carefully sectioned-off and removed. Their hope was that at a later stage, in their laboratory, they could examined the items in order to identify both their age and how they were stored.

When all was said and done, close to 60 pounds of items made from silver and gold were found on the site. These included more than 15,000 Roman coins, 200 gold objects, and several silver spoons. For archaeologists, this find — which later became labeled as the Hoxne Hoard — was an incredible discovery. AP News reported that archaeologist Judith Plouviez was over-the-moon about the discovery, saying that it was “an incredibly exciting and amazing find.” What’s more, another archaeologist, Rachel Wilkinson, told Smithsonian Magazine that this discovery was “the largest and latest ever found in Britain.”

Ordinarily, archaeologists would use radiocarbon dating as a means of identifying the age of ancient relics. However, they couldn’t locate any suitable material from the haul. Consequently, they determined the age by examining writing on the coins, as well as the ruler carved into them, estimating that the treasure was probably buried in either 408 or 409 AD.

Roman-era archaeologist Peter Guest told Smithsonian Magazine that “if you look at them a little more carefully, then they should be dated to the period after the separation of Britain from the Roman Empire.” He offers as part of his evidence the fact that almost all of the coins found in the Hoxne Hoard were clipped – in other words, small chunks of their edges had been taken off. These clippings would have been used to create coins which were similar to the Roman coins of that era.

Guest has a logical reason for this, arguing that “The Roman Empire wasn’t supplying Britain with new gold and silver coins, and in light of that, the population tried to get over this sudden cutoff in the supply of their precious metals by making the existing supplies go further.”

Archaeologists also believe that the treasure belonged to a Romano-British family. During that time, considering that there was so much societal discord and upheaval, it was common for Romans who had settled in Britain to bury their most prized possessions.

That said, one archaeologist is of the belief that the hoard had a lot of sentimental value for the Romano-British family to whom it is believed to have belonged. In her book The Hoxne Late Roman Treasure: Gold Jewellery and Silver Plate, Catherine Johns claims that the manner in which the treasure was kept supported this claim. Some of the items which were recovered had been packaged in small, wooden boxes which were lined with leather. What’s more, pieces of wood, locks, and nails, among other things, surrounded the gold and silver pieces. This leads Catherine to assert that the package was carefully buried and not simply chucked away in a rush.

Interestingly enough, the items unearthed might shed some light on the identity of the family who owned them. They cite a gold bracelet bearing the inscription “UTERE FELIX DOMINA IULIANE,” which roughly translates to “use this happily Lady Juliane”. A second name “Aurelius Ursicinus” has also been discovered. This has consequently led some to believe that Juliane and Aurelius were the couple and the original owners of the treasure. That said, that has yet to be confirmed.

All in all, the discovery was a real treasure for archaeologists, and by extension, for Lawes. According to Smithsonian Magazine, in recognition of his discovery and willingness to contact authorities, the British government rewarded him with over £1.7 million, an amount which he shared with the farmer whose land was dug out in order to get the treasure. Funnily enough, apart from the treasure, Lawes also found his lost hammer — which now resides in the British Museum.
