BREAKING: Two Suspects Arrested in Kruger National Park Murder Investigation

Police in Limpopo have confirmed the arrest of two suspects in connection with the deaths of a Western Cape couple whose disappearance in Kruger National Park shocked South Africa last month. Authorities say the suspects, aged 32 and 33, were arrested in Mozambique following a cross-border investigation involving South African police, Mozambican law enforcement, and SANParks.
The victims, Ernst Marais, 71, and Dina Marais, 73, were last seen on May 20 at the Pafuri Picnic Site in the northern section of Kruger National Park. After they failed to return, a search operation was launched. Their bodies were discovered the following day near Crooks Corner, where the Levubu and Limpopo rivers meet. Investigators reported that both had suffered fatal injuries.

A major breakthrough came when the couple’s stolen Ford Ranger was recovered in Chókwè, Mozambique. Police say the vehicle’s recovery led investigators to the first suspect, who was arrested shortly afterward. A second suspect was later apprehended in Xai-Xai, Mozambique. Both men are expected to face charges including murder and hijacking, with additional charges possible as the investigation continues.
The case has attracted national attention because violent crimes of this nature are exceptionally rare inside Kruger National Park. Authorities have indicated that further arrests remain possible as detectives continue to pursue leads and examine evidence.
For the Marais family and many South Africans following the case, the arrests represent an important step toward accountability. However, investigators stress that the inquiry remains active and that additional developments may emerge in the coming weeks.
