NFL great, 34, drops major retirement hint after difficult 2024 season

Longtime NFL defensive back Jordan Poyer dropped a major retirement hint after a turbulent 2024, as he stands as a free agent once more.

Poyer is best known for his time with the Buffalo Bills, becoming one of their defensive leaders over seven seasons with the organization.

Trying to get younger to keep up with the Kansas City Chiefs, Poyer was released and picked up by divisional rivals, the Miami Dolphins for 2024, where he did little to help the team avoid missing the postseason.

Now without an NFL home again, Poyer made it clear where he would like his football career to go from here.

‘I love the game, you know? I’m in a place right now where I played 12 years, extremely thankful and blessed to have played the game for such a long time,’ Poyer said on NFL Network. ‘Last year was an extremely tough year on so many levels.’

‘Our team wasn’t very good. I didn’t play as well as I wanted to play. It was just a really tough year. Obviously, transitioning from Buffalo to Miami, cultures being different, systems being different, it just didn’t work out the way that anybody had hoped.’

‘But at the same time, I’m thankful for it all, thankful for all the moments, all the friendships. Would I like to play again? Absolutely. Whatever that looks like. It’d be dope, it’d be ideal to have a fantasy ending and be able to retire a Bill, but who knows? I’m just being an open book right now, really enjoying life for what it is.’

‘My heart is always going to be [in Buffalo]. I’m just playing it by ear right now, but would I love to play? Absolutely.’

Poyer was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles before moving on to the Cleveland Browns for four seasons.

Then came his tenure with the Bills, where he rose to stardom alongside Josh Allen’s arrival in Western New York, getting to Buffalo a year before his former teammate.

Poyer is now at a professional crossroads, where it is not impossible he never plays another NFL snap.

Buffalo is one of the most in-demand teams in the league for good reason, with Poyer deep down wanting a reunion.
