Where George Pickens stands on Cowboys contract extension after blockbuster trade

George Pickens is going to let 2025 play out before he worries about a new contract.

The new Cowboy isn’t “looking to do” an extension this offseason as he “wants to show he’s a top guy this year,” according to Dallas insider Clarence Hill Jr.

The embattled wide receiver was traded by the Steelers on Wednesday with a 2026 sixth-round draft pick to the Cowboys in exchange for a 2026 third-round pick and a fifth-rounder in 2027.

Pickens, a second-round pick by Pittsburgh in 2022, is entering the final year of his rookie contract.

Despite his fair share of controversy, Pickens has been one of the top wide receivers in football during his three-year career, tallying at least 800 yards in each season, including a career-high 1,140 yards in 2023 and 900 over 14 games this past season.

The Steelers had expressed plans to pair Pickens with DK Metcalf, who joined the team after a trade from the Seahawks in March, to form one of the best 1-2 wide receivers in the league.

With trade rumors swirling around him earlier this offseason, Steelers general manager Omar Khan said the franchise had no plans to deal Pickens.

“We’re glad we have George and DK here. I think they’re going to be exciting for everyone to watch,” Khan said. “[We’re] excited to have DK here, but no [trade plans].”

In February, Khan even floated the idea of giving Pickens an extension.

“I can tell you that he has a desire to be great,” Khan said, per the Steelers’ website. “He has a desire to be great here. We have a desire for him to be great and to be great here with respect to the contract. But you know, we won’t discuss that publicly, and usually those things are addressed at a later date.”

Instead, Pickens will slide in behind CeeDee Lamb as the No. 2 pᴀss-catcher for quarterback Dak Prescott in Dallas.
